I knew I wasnt going to care for this years model. Apple was going to wait on 5G support (just like they did for 4G) and that alone was enough to dissuade me. The camera looks ugly too.

Apple Pencil support is the only cool thing about this model and odds are pretty dang good that only includes Apple Pencil 2 support, meaning not only would I be getting a new phone but have to also start the upgrade path for my iPad Pro (not something Im against but Id rather wait for an iPhone I want to come along if Im going to be doing such a sweeping upgrade of my hardware).

2020 is going to be the place to be. All the rumors of next years phone sound hype if theyre true (especially if TouchID under the screen becomes a reality).

That said if Apple announces new AirPods at the keynote this year that could be nice. Id get those (since rumor has it they will support noise cancellation, something unique for in-ear buds).

I'm sticking with my XS Max for as long as I possibly can. It's got all the features I could need, the cameras are decent, and I could care less about other gimmicks.

So what's the difference between the 11 Pro and the Max version besides size? I would've limited Pencil support to the Max and bumped the RAM up to 8GB. There's nothing "Max" about it if it's the same thing as the regular Pro.

This is making me want to switch to Samsung tbh. If I have to pay that much for a phone, I want to see serious upgrades. And a design that isnt hideous. I would never pay $1000 for a notch and dumb looking cameras.

I've tried to make the switch multiple times. Android has made amazing strides, but I can't get over a lot of the fundamental issues the OS still has. Hardware-wise, most Android flagships are amazing, though.

The notch only exists for Face ID, but the market is moving away from that to achieve the "all-screen" look. For Samsung, the front cameras are the only obstruction as everything else is under the display for a much sleeker look. OnePlus' solution is the motorized selfie camera with the front being all-screen.

I think if Apple truly wanted to make a splash, they should introduce a true low to mid tier option.

The $750 XR is frankly still flagship level in terms of cost, but I think more people would be willing to trade up their older phones for something that costs as much as Pixel 3a or Galaxy A50. It's not enough to simply rehash a 3 or 4 year old iPhone as the low cost option. People aren't all that into flagships anymore.

The OnePlus does bezel-less pretty well even though it still has a chin. Samsungs hole punch design didnt solve anything. They just moved the problem into a more controversial spot.

Keep the 11 Pro and Max, and get rid of the XR successor. Replace it with the SE successor, give it Face ID, respectable cameras, the requisite specs, and price it around $400.

The floodgates will open.

Realistically, phones have gotten to the point where most people should be on a 4-year upgrade cycle if they're buying flagship phones. The phones themselves have plateaued in terms of functionality, so it's time to start thinking of them more like laptops than like we thought of cell phones in the 2000s.

If you have an iPhone 7 or earlier, I could see this upgrade being worth it. But it's a waste of money for anything newer than that, especially with 5G coming next year.

I upgrade when I damn well please. It's why I've taken to buying my phone outright. I like the liberty of being able to sell it and reap the full resale value.

But otherwise, yes, this upgrade isn't worthwhile because of the 5G cusp. Apple is the opposite of Samsung when it comes to emerging tech.
