isn't that "gross and unusual punishment"? how was this legal to hand out a life sentence for 50 bucks?

The unusually harsh punishment was the result of Alabamas Habitual Felony Offender Act, also known as the three strikes law, which was originally intended to crack down on repeat offenders when it was enacted in the 1970s. But Kennard wasnt exactly a hardened career criminal when he was sentenced to life behind bars: His prior history consisted of being charged in connection with a break-in at an unoccupied gas station when he was 18, which landed him on probation for three years, AL.com reported.

I haven't clicked the link, but if he robbed them at gunpoint I would say that is fair. Big difference between armed robbery and petty theft.

Using a knife to to committ armed robbery implies he was willing to kill to steal. No different from a gun in that regard. If it was first offense 20 years would probably be max sentence. But under 3 strikes law it sounds fair. It was a felony offense.

Three strikes laws aren'tt exclusive to alabama. California has the same shit and it was enacted way more recently than alabamas.

Lite was totally fair imo. The fact that it was only $50 was irrelevant. He robbed a bakery with a deadly weapon while on probation for another robbery. He had a second chance and blew it. This is someone who doesnt belong in society.

Insane how venal and cruel so many Americans are when it comes to criminal justice. The idea that any 22 year old, much less someone who didn't commit any bodily harm, is irredeemable for life is preposterous.

I mean robbery is a violent crime. What does how much he happened to take have to do with anything? If the bakery had 200k sitting around would you think differently?

Well he robbed a store. The amount of money he took is probably irrelevant. The title trying to make you think he swiped a bill when no one was looking or something.

But life in prison is kind of silly for robbery. Most people just get probation.

Boo hoo lets just allow young people to go around robbing places at knifepoint. And if they kill someone give them a medal instead of jail time.

The biggest issue with this 3 stroke law is that it considers convictions as "strikes", even if they all occurred at the same time. His previous strikes were from pleading to 3 counts related to 1 incident. That seems to go against the basic idea of the 3 strikes law.

A women who drugged and sexually assaulted many children at a day care got 30 days in prison when she pled guilty. Because she wasnt on probation was that a fair sentence?
