Not necessarily ironic, but I've always thought of it differently than how it sounds. It's a "mark" against their "beauty" that keeps them from perfection. It provides "character". Some people dont like things too perfect, so a beauty mark normalizes them to a degree.

It is like a juxposition or counter melody. The imperfection makes the rest, the perfection more striking and pronounced, which sublimates the person's qualities beyond mere ideal.

In simple terms, flaws make perfect things more striking.

Yeah, beauty marks and moles look ugly as hell. I don't get why they're portrayed as pretty at all. It's like having a nice painting and then putting a random splatter somewhere on it.
