I'd think it's very rare and hard to be a successful CEO who's close to the lay of the land of the business if they're making millions or billions regardless of performance.

I'd imagine companies would perform better with cheaper CEOs who HAVE to show up to work, who HAVE to do what's needed. It's not like there's a short supply of CEOs, especially since there's CEOs who would jump at the chance to lead places like Amazon at even 1/20th the pay. So, why pay them what they're paid? Is there some kind of formula where higher CEO pay can be generally converted into how much a company makes for a quarter?

Is it really so simple? Because from the bottom up, as a lay person, I don't see that correlation. I see people who have connections with important people, the right people, and the skills to get what they want on their terms. That's probably what was being increasingly valued in the american economy from the 1970s to now. At least from my point of view it looks like CEOs are valued more like keys that open doors. But then, that's a type of contribution to any company isn't it? Something that any company would value above labor and business itself.

not everyone is as soullessly materialistic as you

Maybe you should learn what materialism means before using the word. Not everyone wants to live in their parent's basement like you do.

like the GM recall fiasco years ago where people literally died because GM determined it was more cost effective to let people die and pay the settlements than it was to conduct the recall. the CEO signed off on this decision and knew people would die but didn't care because profits. this was found out and no charges were pressed against him.

The free market at work

No it freaking isn't. The free market tried to kill GM for its crimes but the Government would have none of it.

To me, the best feeling is to have zero debt.

After paying off my student loans, all I have left is my mortgage. And that feels super great.

Well that's the core belief that conservatism hinges on

If you're rich, then you deserve to wield unchecked power because you got there all on your own hard work. and if you're poor, well...you either didn't try hard enough, or you just deserve to be poor

Conservatism falls apart if we don't live in a pyramid where power consolidates at the top, so CEO's making this much is the system working as intended

Some lawyers work hundred hour weeks and have the fates of industries, companies, and governments riding on their production. And I don't think they get paid nearly as much as these CEOs. This disparity is simply not justifiable and feeds itself because increased compensation leads to increased political power and ability to block anything that would give labor more power or reduce the power of management.

We could have a rule limiting this to 150x your average employee and they would still live lives of incomprehensible luxury. Is it really our position as a society that people can and should make the absolute greatest amount of money they possibly can, even if that creates gross disparities of wealth and power in society?

I wasn't addressing that to you. But yes, being debt free is a good feeling. Being mortgage-free is even a better feeling. That's why making enough to buy the house in one shot without getting a mortgage is so important in a less-stressing life.

It's not about how much/hard you work; it's about what your work contributes to the company. These CEOs save millions for the company in an afternoon sometimes.

So do they get reprimanded when they lose millions in an afternoon? A janitor could lose a few thousand by wasting some supplies ...

Probably. There's a revolving door for them at many companies, though that could be for a number of reasons. Our company is on its third since I started here in December 2015.

Interesting - we seem to see/read a lot of articles about the opposite - store personnel getting laid off while the CEO is kept on despite huge financial loses due to things like premature expansion etc
