when crysis was released would that count as the PC skipping 3-4 branches towards the top?

5->6 definitely looked a lot better but I feel like 4->5 going fro most games being 2D to most games being 3D is just way too significant not to pick it

Nah, that's actually why it's a bad choice.

The jump in graphical quality for both 2D and 3D was huge, but when you cross-compare as you kind of have to do since, as you say, most 4th gen games were 2D while most 5th gen games were 3D, 4th gen 2D graphics look miles better than 5th gen 3D graphics.

well personally I would consider the graphics being 3D a significant jump in itself, outside of their visual appeal or whatever. Calculating and displaying 3D graphics is a lot mroe complicated than 2D ones

I would consider how complicated it is irrelevant tbh.

From a technical perspective yes but from an artistic perspective no.

Early 3d games haven't aged well in terms of graphics, but late stage 2d games still stand the test of time

whether or not they stand the test of time has no bearing on how great the graphical leap was

4 to 5 and the leap into 3d gaming. I still remember the moment, and the game, and how blown away I was witnessing a 3d game for the first time on a console.

Such an underappreciated game.

I played the first & second ones for the first time a year ago & I actually preferred the first one...

They're both kinda unpolished games, but still really fun.

5 to 6 was massive for the biggest leap in graphics, which is what I voted.

4 to 5 for arguably the biggest leap in gameplay advancement. The graphical jump wasnt necessarily as big, but adding another dimension changed the industry.
