Only the rich kids had Payless. The rest of us had Walmart. K-Mart before Walmart hit the area.

By a long shot. The reason TV portrays high school this way is because kids' media is always set one level older than the audience. Kids for babies, middle school for elementary school, high school for middle school. Then they focus on problrms relatable foe the tsrget audience.

The first real bout of shoe elitism we had in middle school were those white Adidas superstars with the different color stripes.

Yeah I remember that. It was a big deal to have brands like Nike or addidas.

I don't remember any kids giving a shit about shoes in my school. Well unless you got those shoes with the shit on the sides/toe that changes colors when you poke at it, then you were pretty popular for about a week.

This. No one even talked about shoes. In fact for a minute it was a fad for us to change shoes when we hit to school. To the point it got ridiculous and I was wearing some chicks...those shoes that are on an elevating block >_>. I don't think they're called high heels but they're similar but way bulkier everywhere. Anyway yeah....it was a small school

I should clarify that if you had the badass light-up shoes, or like, the ones with the skates in the bottom? You were a pretty cool kid.

But having bad shoes didn't make you uncool.

I had something called "Ooze Shoes" that had color-changing goop in them

Needless to say, they were a hit

Hmm. Crazy. Definitely wasn't the case around here. I was in middle school when everyone wanted to be skaters so I think skater shoes were pretty common. I still wear skater company shoes today cause the padding and fit is easily my perfered

No one really cared about what shoes you wore at my school. There were certainly styles that were popular, but no one cared if yours were knockoffs. Birkenstock clogs were huge for a while as an example.

I almost bought a pair of Iverson Answer 5s when they first dropped, but wisely decided against it. Another chubby white kid like me made that mistake and he got ripped a new one

That was the case at my school. Middle and working class kids had Vans & Chuck Taylor's (Converse). Rich kids (or those pretending to be) had Nike and Addidas. There was one kid who had two pairs of Nikes. He was of course the coolest kid in school.

I shake my head at what they charge for Vans and Chuck Taylor's nowadays.
