Top level geniuses, people like Hawking, might have made "amazing" breakthroughs in theoretical science, been acclaimed by other members of the scientific community (lol), but...they've done almost nothing to improve our day to day lives. At all. I feel like the guys who pick up the trash once a week help me with my life more than these STEM geniuses have.

Some people, like biologists have contributed greatly to human life, of course. You know, treatments for serious illnesses, etc. Physicists and mathematicians, etc. however...what are they doing with their lives?

Nothing.

Some people consider knowledge for the sake of knowledge an enriching experience that helps them enjoy life and all of life's mysteries.

The TC is obviously not one of those people.

On the contrary. I love finding out things. I often learn about things that have no *practical* effect on my quality of life. But scientists are spending billions of dollars - of taxpayers money - to work on this stuff, to say nothing of slapping each other on the backs due to their "discoveries", and I think that is really bad. I know CE won't agree, since half of them are "scientists", i.e. they are stuck in some basement, working for their company's IT help desk, helping people who have accidentally unplugged their printers.

I think their contribution is indirect.

Math and science go hand-in-hand. People who advance mathematics and physics might make some discoveries in chemistry, science and biology possible that would otherwise not have been. Or something.

Exactly. This isn't meant to be disparaging at all, but most biologists are not in the business of developing mathematics. Someone has to do it because math is pretty central to biology.

But even if that weren't the case, there's no reason that mathematics shouldn't be done. It's knowledge for the sake of knowledge.

TC is like the people from Interstellar that denied the moon landing because space travel is supposedly a waste of time.
