Unpopular opinion for obvious reasons, and honestly one that has a lot of room for argument. The gist of it comes down to it being better for the sake of the falsely accused - giving a severe penalty if they're caught in the lie, but a more lenient one(how lenient depending on the circumstances) if they come clean gives incentive for the accusers to clear the name of the victims.

No right or wrong answer because it's obviously a godawful situation, but that's how I see it.

I say no, because if they get away with it, they are very likely not going to come forward and say it was fabricated and false. If they claim guilt only after they are caught, and do so to get a lesser punishment, that's bullshit.

If they did so, and got away with it, and then come forward later and say the claim was false, clearing the name of the accused, and only in this situation, I still feel like the punishment should be severe and upheld fully.

I don't mean the punishment should be a slap on the wrist, and it absolutely shouldn't be lighter if they only come forward because they're getting caught. However, as much as they deserve a harsh sentence, giving a lighter one(and a far harsher sentence if they're caught in the lie) will encourage some to come clean, and that's more important than punishing the guilty.
