Ya know getting a girlfriend, getting married, getting that career job, getting that dream house etc.

but all my friends have this idea that if you dont achieve all this stuff youve failed in life and forever be depressed

which is funny because then I have other friends (these same friends) that strived so hard to get this before they turn 25 years old and now they hate their life and are depressed

I was just talking about this with someone recently. Yes, I fully admit I gave up on the career thing and feel no shame about it. Not for lack of trying, though; I used to be fairly ambitious and tried really hard to grab the world by the balls as a young person fresh out of college, but I heard "no, no, no" so many times I became disheartened and just accepted the first job I took out of school which was even sort of related to my area of study would probably be the one I die at. I don't hate it, but 14 years later I'm still there and am still told no when I make the rare attempt to move up. But, I'm content with life in general I guess you could say. I'm happily married with a nice house and car, a cupboard full of food and a few dollars in the bank, and enough side interests to keep me fulfilled.

Getting married just doesn't seem like it's for me. I never even had a girlfriend let alone getting married. I don't think I could handle the stress of being married. I don't think my heart can handle if a marriage that I could be in goes very wrong.

im in the same boat... do I continue to purse my dream job or just give up and go back to uni and just become a teacher and be a teacher until I retire
