My current laptop slows the fuck down when I open more than 3 tabs at a time. And it absolutely doesnt even work with Windows Movie Maker running. I need something that isnt a total piece of shit, but I also need to be careful with my money.

Internet searches are only giving me stuff at upwards of $700 and... I really cant do that...

youre probably not doing that then. if youre looking for a workstation type deal those are usually in the thousands

and honestly itd be much better to wait until you have some money to work with than cheap out and get something that doesnt meet your needs that youll have to replace anyway

Even a passable computer is still gonna run a lot? I dont need something that runs everything flawlessly, I just need something that doesnt completely shut down when Im trying to do work.

Video editing is more intense than gaming. you will NOT find one that is decent under a thousand US dollars, if that cheap

If this really is work related for you, create a business and write it off as a business expense.

Its not work related

I have no reliable job prospects and no future. I was hoping I could use this as a showcase of my skills and eventually learn how to edit. But Im kind stuck.

You dont even need to create a business. You can write it off as a work expense regardless.

Yeah, but when taxes come along, it is a lot easier if you get audited.

What kind of video editing? There's no way it takes a $1k+ PC to use Windows Movie Maker. Even if the issue is rendering it might take longer on a budget PC but it's still doable.

I built mine on an ultra tight budget like 8 years ago with all AMD products and it can run 3DS Max, Blender, GIMP with multiple hi res textures open, CrazyBump and some others simultaneously without issue.

Granted that's not video editing and I don't know the first thing about video editing, but it makes me a little skeptical that you couldn't do it with a ~$1000 budget PC. The TC doesn't seem to be looking for a professional grade supercomputer, they want a PC that's more than a moderately expensive space heater.

I mean, I built a new PC this past spring, but it's not a mad gaming rig. My old computer was built in 2008 and I needed something for the kids to do their homework and whatnot. I spent less than $600.

You can do like I did and get a cheap rig, but the bulk of your money is video card. Disclaimer: I have no idea what specs you'd need for video editing. Not my thing.
