By wedge I mean how they have leveraged their way into every single industry, without competition.

Because, what's the alternative to advertising? ... quality?

I would say no only on the grounds that the best form of advertisement, to me, is word of mouth. No amount of advertisement to me can replace hearing the good or bad of a product from someone I trust. For someone like me who no longer watches television and only stream stuff off Netflix, my exposure to advertisements is fairly minimal. I might occasionally see something on Instagram, Facebook, GameFAQs, YouTube, etc. but it rarely grabs my attention.

There is no alternative. It's its own industry

Quality does not replace advertising. It is not an alternative

no matter how much quality (value) you have, you still have to communicate it to the consumer. the problem (and I guess it's a pretty common one) is that the marketplace is flooded with crap, and from the consumer's point of view there's almost no way to find what's good, making advertising mostly useless.
