Yeah. I remember crying a few times over it.

But I was nine and friends of my parents seriously talked about it over and over in front of me.

I never bought into it.

Yes, because I was a kid who didn't fully understand how everything worked, so listening to the media talking about what was going to happen once the clock struck midnight January 1st, 2000 scared me.

And yeah, I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to play my games anymore. I think I tried to get as much playing in as I could, but I was relieved when I woke up the next morning to find everything still working.

No

But we didn't own a computer so my parents said we'd be fine and I had no reason to think we wouldn't be.

I don't think they actually grasped what Y2K would have meant, though. They're pretty fucking dumb when it comes to anything technological past 1986.

No, I was too young to really comprehend the fear behind it. My tenuous grasp on the situation at the time was "some computers are gonna fry, and maybe some people will have a hard time doing their job for a while *shrug*"

Nah.

The main thing that set my mind at ease was when a teacher at school said that it would cause banks to close everyone's account and reopen the accounts of people who lived in 1900, using George Washington as an example.

I realized then that mass hysteria is based at least partially on stupid people who not only don't understand the situation but don't understand anything else either.

I was pissed that I had to spend two months updating the bejeezus out of everything.

Although in hindsight the IT industry went so far overboard that they pretty much eliminated any possibility of y2k bugs causing any problems.

I wouldn't go that far.

It was a real thing that could have caused a lot of trouble. A lot of companies put a lot of money into fixing it.

Yall laugh but you have no idea how bad a lot of companies and oddly enough education/research groups are about using out of date and even out of business equipment.

After all my work I still had to airgap this old ass windows nt 3.5 machine that ran the software to control this fancy microscope camera they used.

I wasn't expecting much to happen, given that I was rational enough to understand that things that keep track of the time but not the date had 0% chance of being affected.

The three things I particularly remember about it were:
- our school's typing practice program going haywire and crashing when you tried to view the statistics after Y2K (I predicted something like this would happen since, when you started up it would show the system date and ask if it was correct, and if not you could enter a date but it wouldn't accept anything past 1999),
- the Juno email client showing the year as "19100" for awhile, and
- the grocery store having a sign up saying they reserved the right to limit or refuse returns of items bought but no longer wanted just because the world didn't end.

I wasn't scared so much as semi-braced for impact.

I didn't really think it'd happen, but knew if it did it'd probably suck. I did sit there waiting during the final lead up and the few hours after going 'is it... did it.... oh nothing' and moving on. Sorta like when you hear something's going to be visible in the sky at a certain hour. You're curious to check it out and see if you can spot it, then move on.

I remember it well because the girls were chatting on AIM and doing some stupid shit and I was in a bad mood at something. I just posted up and played some stupid shit like Donkey Kong 64.
