If it's ground beef and lettuce and cheese, like American fast food style, hard shell is better

If it's actual cuts of meat or fish with pico de gallo and salsa and avocado, gimme the corn tortilla

Soft all the way. I used to not really care, but I can't stand a shell falling to pieces on me these days and I just tend to get more volume with each bite of a soft shell taco.

Where I live is almost entirely Sonoran Mexican food, and they use hard shells for all tacos unless you specify otherwise. However, each type of taco gets its own shell that fits it. The beef tends to come with a deep fried flour hard shell. The chicken and fish and such come with either deep fried or toasted corn hard shells.

Burritos are made using soft like usual, but are thrown on the grill briefly after wrapping.
