Most nerds don't even have good taste in film. The people complaining were the same people who complain about the following three films in their Youtube videos and shit.
1) Super Mario Bros was a great post apocalyptic movie, just not accurate to its source material and took tons of liberties. Even if the production was riddled with problems, the end product was still a fun movie.
2) Garbage Pail Kids wasn't a bad movie by any means. Some of the writing was iffy, and it was weird that a kid who looked like he wasn't 14 was trying to date a girl who looked about 20 named Tangerine -- and he was getting bullied by guys who looked like they were in the mid twenties. But otherwise - the practical effects were good, and it had just as many funny moments as it did terribly unfunny moments.
3) Troll 2 has some decent makeup and practical effects. It's poorly acted and has some awkward writing - but it's hardly the worst movie I've ever watched.

I go to horror conventions and see ACTUAL bad z-grade films. Some film makers I like, others are far, far worse than anything I just mentioned or than Sonic could ever possibly be. As for AAA releases, there have been plenty of movies far worse than the three I mentioned or Sonic, potentially -- the Robocop remake, the Emoji movie, etc. Yet tons of nerds actually liked the Robocop remake? That's a far bigger blasphemy than Sonic having long, skinny legs

tl;dr most people complaining about it looking bad hardly have good taste themselves.

They didnt model sonic, it looks more like the altered an existing model to be sonic-ish.

All of the base parts are human designed first, his hands are human, his mouth, legs, arms, eyes, etc.

If he was made from the ground up as sonic none of those make sense but if they started with a human model the design makes sense in how it was made.

Idk how you can say just people have bad taste in films and defend the Mario movie. It was legitimately bad. That isn't a nerd opinion that is an every sane person opinion.

I say that as someone who rented at least 5 times as a kid.

I honestly didn't think the design was as bad as the rest of the internet thought it was. While there were awkward looking segments, as a whole it looked fine. Then again, I also am not as in love with the Detective Pikachu designs as the rest of the internet was, so I'll just be in the minority on this one.

I defended those two movies. GPK had great makeup and practical effects, didn't have terrible acting, and at least had some funny/charming/redeeming qualities to it. Troll 2 is fun.
The Robocop remake has zero redeeming qualities.
