For those who don't want to or can't watch the video:

Trump wants to add "Are you a US Citizen" to the census as a question.
It's shot down due to the regulation that states you need a valid contemporaneous reason to add/edit/remove questions in the Census.

The reason given was "To help enforce the Voting Rights Act" but the judge rejected that since that reason was stated long after the call to add the question began and after the DOJ hunted for several weaker reasons to justify it before ending on Voting Rights Act. Calling the reason "contrived" not a genuine justification at the time of the call to add the question.

Due to this the Census is then being prepared without the question.

Trump responds by posting this.
Q6aFHZ0

The confused judge responded in court by asking the lawyers if the Government's goal was to continue pushing to add the question despite it being rejected.

The DOJ attornies sheepishly say that the tweet caught them by surprise as well, it's not the stance of the government and the Census is being prepared without that question despite what Trump says.

Then every single DOJ attorney immediately asks the judge if they can withdraw from the case. No real reason is given as to why and they do not state who will replace them. (which you are supposed to do)

The judge then denied their request (other than 2 of them who have flat out quit their jobs) pointing out that they did not give a reason for withdrawing nor stating who will replace them. And points out that a motion is due in 3 days. So it would be massively distruptive.

They need a clear reason for their withdrawl, say who will replace them and finish their affairs first.

To which Trump tweets again:

....

tl:dr: Trump wants to add a question to the census but his attornies have on every level utterly failed to follow the law in doing so, then they wanted to quit after Trump made embarrasing tweets but can't because they failed to quit correctly....

This is a real "I don't even" case

Question. Were they the DOJ lawyers before Trump came into power or does the new president appoint his own?

Yeah, probably. TBF I did laugh, but at the idiocy of the fact that he seems to think anyone who doesnt agree with him should be expelled from the country.

Actually wait thats more than just idiocy, its terror.

The news stories from last week stated that Trump/the DOJ tried to have them replaced because they basically couldn't come up with any good arguments as to why the citizenship question should be allowed on the census, not that the lawyers tried to quit.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/09/us/census-citizenship-question.html

Where are the news stories that claim the lawyers specifically told the judge they wanted off the case?

Every single one of them signed a motion for withdrawl that was given to the judge

WTF are you even trying to argue here?
