I worked at a cashier for my aunt's place and never expected to get tipped and rarely ever got tipped. I mean all I was doing was handing over their food and taking their money.

I never do, but some places actually expect it. I've seen pizza places that only do carryout or delivery with tip jars on the counters, and I've heard it rationalized before as "well, they are bagging up your order and putting forks, napkins et.c in the bag so you should tip them".

When I see tip jars in such a situation, I'll simply never go back to that restaurant.

I hope not. Why do I need to tip someone for doing their job? Do people tip police officers or construction workers?

Generally what I've seen is that it isn't expected, but it is appreciated because those tips still contribute towards the staff who prepared the food, but when it does occur nobody would ever anticipate anywhere close to what a full tip would be. So like a few bucks at pickup is good courtesy but if you didn't leave anything people won't think you're cheap.

I choose carryout to avoid tipping. You're the one using up gas and time to pick up and take home the pizza. So they should tip you.
