Help me settle a bet with my friend. My friend's option is the top and mine is the bottom. He thinks his option is better and that mine sucks.

If theyre mortally wounded, how have you lost?

Simple, they have companions that are willing to do whatever heal them or failing that, proceed to carry out their ally's plan.

Unless your goal is just revenge, then there are a number of options - such as the antagonists plans still come to pass

Yeah, but you won the battle and that's what counts. Who cares about wars?

Considering all of the hopeless "long shot candidates" who run for president, inevitably lose to the bigger names, and then parlay their 15 minutes of fame into fountains of money with book deals, jobs on 24/7 news channels, speaking fees, etc...

The 2nd thing isn't even necessarily that bad.

Depends on the fight. There are some unwinnable scenarios which also have dire consequences.

First one is worse from a personal perspective, but the second one sounds worse in a bigger picture sense.

"Dying at the hands of a mortally wounded enemy, knowing you've lost"

I mean in this option your being killed by someone who is already dying so I'd say that's more insulting. Plus the other person will be dead soon too so eh.

Where does it say you inflicted that blow?

Edit: Wait, do you die in the second option? If not then the one where you die is worse.

Yep this too but I assume in both cases you die.

so you can assume you die in both scenarios, but i can't assume you dealt the killing blow in the 1st scenario?

That reminds me of FF Tactics I mean it's still a good ending for everyone except the protagonist and his party.
