I've honestly only read ASoIaF, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings.

And I might get lynched for this, but I put LotR last. Fuck Tom Bombadil.

You might like some of Butcher's other work.

Codex Alera is a 6 book series he finished a while back, and Cinder Spires is just getting started.

What is malazan chronicles (a book name) I'm not good with series names a lot of the time.

I've read every book from the rest (plus butcher and druid guy) and for high fantasy I would give it to wheel of time. It's a damn shame the author died before completion, and as much as I love Sanderson it just didn't feel the same.

Voted for discworld though, would consider them a different genre but from that list they win.

Oh, and on the topic of Sanderson, in high fantasy he would win. Check out the mistborn trilogy.

It's better to not start Malazan at all. The ideas are grand and great, but the writer (Steven Erikson I think his name was) is incompetent at putting them together in a way that is compelling beyond what the ideas themselves entail.

Stables of the franchise (at least up to the fourth book, I stopped after that cause it was getting annoying)

-Deus ex machinas solving every issue
-Cliffhangers where its obvious that its written in a way where the characters have obtained some sort of important knowledge that is arbitrarily kept from the reader for hundreds of pages, maybe even several books
-Characters with the power to literally destroy the world popping up everywhere but miraculously stopped just in time
-Literal gods intervening in human affairs all the time to remove actual agency from the interesting characters
-Every fucking character in the franchise from the highest god to the lowest soldier who knows nothing except fighting having deep, philosophical inner monologues about the nature of the world and their place in it. There's no character nuance. Everyone is fucking Aristotle.

And this isn't just something that happens once per book or so. It happens over and over and over again in every book. When your books are 1200 pages long thats a lot of world-destroying enemies to stop or deus ex machinas to throw out there.

That said, as stated the ideas present are amazing and despite this poor writing that ultimately made it impossible for me to continue reading the series, I did enjoy some of my time with it because of how good they are. Especially the third book Memories of Ice had me glued to the pages. So if such issues arent a bother for you, go for it.

Wheel of Time is phenomenal, even if they could've told the story in half as many books. The thing is you don't really mind, because spending time with the characters is awesome.

My favorite is the Belgariad and the Mallorean. And I'm well aware of all the criticisms of them before you start in on me. But this is favorite, not best. The characters make me laugh.

Dune should have been on the initial list, and His Dark Materials has not been said and was excellent.

Stormlight Archives.

TC give Malazan a try it's very dense and not my thing personally, but it's well written and full of great stories and characters. It's also less an ongoing story than a history of the world, with each new book generally having new main characters.

I also highly suggest the greatcoats quadrilogy, basically a modern darker version of Three Musketeers.

And Joe Abercrombie First Law Trilogy and the three solo books following are some of the best fantasy ever.

I can't see myself in any of those except Harry Potter. If I were going to choose something off that list, I'd go with the Dresden Files, but even Dresden has his moments where I get tired of him.

I'd choose the setting of the Broken Earth trilogy.

EDIT: I may have misinterpreted the question. Harry Potter, then Discworld.

In fairness to TC, he comes off as much more of a "casual" fantasy fan(not meant as a bad thing at all TC!) other than naming Malazan, and Dark Tower is still pretty niche. A lot of people don't even realise the movie was based on anything.
