My father-in-law owns several guns. He keeps them all locked up in a safe that only he knows the password to. That's not exactly typical toy behavior.

Growing up I had friends whose families did this, and friends where guns were just lying around the kitchen or whatever. I think its a much better idea to keep things locked up, not just because someone in the family could go nuts, but obviously if you're robbed they aren't taking a gun safe.

I kinda understand that people who live in sparsely populated areas need guns for their safety, since it could take a significant amount of time for the police to arrive on the scene. What I don't get is that anyone needs several guns. What could you possibly need that many guns for? Just in case a random mob of several dozen people decide to march upon your house with torches and pitchforks?

Id prefer adults to be responsible and actually have a mindset of a gun being a deadly weapon (or even a mindset of not actually needing a gun whatsoever) instead of thinking is a cowboy toy to show off with

And the overly powerful ones or whatever. But I guess if you can own one why not own dozens? >_>

But yeah I totally get having one for home defense or maybe conceal carry if you have to be a bad area or something, but that stuff is expensive, I dunno why some of my friends want to own a small arsenal. Ignoring any safety issues its just awfully expensive.

Not everything has to be about NEEDS. WANTS are just as valid and unlike needs, they do not require justification, only ability to acquire.

Like tools there isnt an end all be all. small handguns are better to conceal in summer, mid size are easier to wear and unholster in winter. if you want to go hiking or camping and are worried about the wildlife a larger handgun like a .44 might be more ideal especially if you wont want to worry about the weight of a long gun.

for a home invasion situation that tends to come down to the individual. if their home has a lot of corners a full length shotgun might not be the best choice, maybe a handgun would make better sense and then you get into the caliber wars of what can overly penetrate and what cant, what is going to disorientate you more in and indoor setting and what isnt as much (a .45 for instance is naturally subsonic where as a shotgun is going to blow your ear drums out).

if someone is a farmer you arnt going to use a .45-70 to take down ground hogs nor are you going to use a .22 to kill a wild boar. it gets even more extreme if you are a hunter. you arnt going to use a rifle to shoot pheasants and chances are high you arnt going to use a shotgun beyond 50yards to kill a deer. then you also have the environment to account for. are you in heavy brush and wooded areas? then youre going to need a gun that fires a heavier bullet to punch through the brush. are you on the plains? then youll need a flatter shooting rounds like a 30-06 or 6.5creed.

and thats isnt even getting intot he whole 2nd amendment movement of which thats another hornets nest. point being its not crazy to think an individual might own half a dozen or more firearms.

Because there isn't one gun that is right for all situations. I could easily justify owning a rifle (for hunting/varmint control), a shotgun (for birds/home-defense), and a sidearm (for concealed carry).

But of course, I live in a remote area where owning firearms for hunting purposes is feasible. It's important to follow state and local laws when it comes to ownership.

I think the bigger idiot is the leftist or person of a minority group going on about gun control when the country is on the verge of a civil war, and the right is gonna come for him and his family not with pitchforks and torches, but with assault rifles, and he will not take a single one of them with him before dying.

while i doubt it will get that bad, it is still fucked how so many on the left have such pussified defeatist attitudes towards any push back. so many people when asked what you would do during a war breaking out or some SHTF situation they almost always basically say they will roll over and die and that there is no point in going on if things got that bad. then you have them willing to disarm the population while also citing every cop, soldier and right leaning individual (whos tasked with largely protecting them) is a scumbag racist willing to kill you and all minorities or be complacent in others killing you. how there is literally hitler 2.0 in the whitehouse with concentration camps at the lower border, but they should still disarm themselves. the whole thing is insane.

It's definitely not that bad now, but these past few years have seen polarization that could very well mark the beginning of the road to the situation you describe.

This is a fenced in chicken pen, with a closing wood door. Bobcats dig, will pry fencing away, will break away at older wood. Ask any livestock farmer if they are 100% predator free and not a single one will tell you yes. They find a way eventually.

Also to add to that, if a predator, like bobcats, mountain lions, coyotes, which all live on this mountain, see a food source, they will stay around your property constantly, increasing danger to yourself, pets, your neighbors, etc. Not sure how thrilled you would be running into a 100+ lb aggressive cat between you and your car in the middle of the night.
