I don't know if you guys remember correctly but there were a fair share of people who actually loved the surprise of using Raiden instead of Solid. In fact a ton of them said Raiden was better than Snake.

1. Raiden was a killer at a VERY young age
2. Raiden was furthered trained by Solidus
3. Raiden apparently defeated a simulation of the Shadow Moses AND Tanker incident with flying colors
3. Destroyed a ton of fucking Metal Gears while Snake struggled with one
4. He then went on to beat his own mentor Solidus

Comments? Thoughts? Opinions?

Raiden wouldn't have been nearly as hated if you unlocked the sword for the whole game after beating it and if Rose wasnt so annoying.

I kinda regret that magazines ended up spoiling that you played as Raiden, because that would have been a good surprise

but yea, I liked him as a character, but not because of the reasons in the OP. it's because he came off as being more "human" than Solid

The shit they pulled with Rose is damn creepy and unsettling. Imagine the government reading your google search history to create a perfect girlfriend for you and setting up a perfect romantic comedy meeting between the two of you just so she can emotionally manipulate you for the government's sake.

Like, Rose flat out says that the government knew about Raiden's preference for brunettes. It's like an even more insidious Truman Show arranged by the Patriots. MGS2 is a damn masterpiece.

Raiden was bad in MGS2 and terrible in MGS4.

To this day I can't understand why people not only liked MGS4 Raiden but liked him enough that suddenly everyone "loved him even in MGS2."

He's an emo edgelord with high heels for feet who fights by literally break dancing but just because he stops Outer Haven in an obvious violation of the laws of physics, when he could have easily just picked up Snake and run off instead people loved him.

It wasn't until Rising that he was finally decent, and that was entirely because he was a parody of himself.

I won't say Solidus Snake didn't do anything wrong, because he did, but his goal was ultimately noble and I hate hate hate that he was thrown to the side so unceremoniously after his death. I also loathe that off-handed comment about him killing Raiden's true parents, because it just felt like a lame excuse to get Raiden and the player by extension some motivation to take down an otherwise noble guy.

I mean, it's clear that Kojima's intention was to write a story he couldn't possible write a sequel to. Its canon is a dang mess, and it's more or less impossible to determine what actually happened at pretty much any point in the game.

This is why the next game was a prequel and why 4 is such a mess. Kojima had to undo his own sabotage.

I played MGS2 way later in the HD collection, and I think playing it knowing that you're gonna play as Raiden and knowing Kojimas reasoning makes you appreciate it a little more
