Socialism is such a stupid bogeyman word

If you bring up public schools, public roads, police force, fire service etc. Everyone supports them

If you bring up how shit the US healthcare system is, everyone agrees

If you bring up how crappy the US welfare system is, most people agree.

But if you use the word "socialist" everyone goes insane.

America is not a socialist country but it's full of socialist policies.

That's the point, we should take the best part of good ideas and use them while ignoring the shit parts.

I agree with everything you said but let me bold that for you. When people use that term as a positive way forward for America then its typically taken as full blown Socialism. Thats why that term is so polarizing. Some Americans believe full blown Socialism is the way to go

Yup. Unfortunately the younger parts of the Dem party right now believe it is the way forward.
While ranting about Trump acting like a would-be emperor, making laws as he sees fit left and right. Even though he isn't. Only to believe a system where some loon is a de facto emperor making any laws they see fit left and right is the answer.
So long as it's what they believe in. A leftists ideology. That's the difference.
And this is damn dangerous.

That's why the throwaway word "socialism" is so dumb.

It's a lazy way to dismiss political discussion. Instead of talking about ideas or policies or strcutures just go "Is it Socialism? Oh well then it's shit/great."

The healthcare system in France is far superior to the US system. We should adopt something more along it's lines. If that's a socialist policy then who the fuck cares? It's a good one.

It doesn't stop being a good one because you threw the S word at it.

But people think public education sucks (and it does -- especially compared to private education). Same for roads, and you have people mad at the police. lol

People having issues with the policies doesn't mean they don't support them

If you're truly arguing that the American people are opposed to public schools, libaries, fire/police serve etc then you're just being a contrarian for the sake of arguming.

Even most libertarians go awkwardly silent at that part.

Most likely, when you make that assertion, you're comparing the best private schools to the worst public ones. 'Cause there are plenty of fantastic public schools, and and there's more than a few crappy private ones.

People who have issues with how the police are run or how public schools are funded aren't expressing that because they want those things privatized. they just want them run better...They are in favor of those socialist policies but just agree that our government need to do a better job with them. That's not anti-socialist policy. That's just admitting the obvious that our government isn't doing a great job....so they're willing to vote for those who they think will...and not this guy.

I love how conservatives depict proponents of socialism as lazy or unemployed.

Young people are actually more employed and working longer hours than they have been in years. However, theyre also payed less than any generation that came before them since WWII, so their hard work is being valued at less and less and less, and things like healthcare and education are rising in price steadily, as wages stagnate.

When people support socialist ideals, its typically people who have worked harder and gotten a hell of a lot less out of it than most old people who condemn them (while having enjoyed the result of a highly taxed 20th century America, and currently sucking on socialist programs that benefit the elderly).

When polled on Medicare for all, numbers consistently show that over 50% of Americans desire it. The number fluctuates with the natural biases of the wording, however, but even the most negative slanted wording, in a poll released by CNN (in which they mention an increase in taxes), still resulted in over 50% approval. Meanwhile theres also the time that 70% said they would prefer it.

I'm not a conservative.

Perhaps not, but you certainly are quick to employ their hollow talking points.

This is a good chance to educate me on just what a Biden/Hillary Clinton-esq Democrat stands for. Because from my perception, it seems as if the safe liberal standpoint is to say that you stand for [insert safe position that has already come to pass and be established], and resist any leftwards movement on the grounds of any change being too radical.

Democrats opposed gay marriage and gays in the military as being too radical of a stance for so long until very recently. And even then, it was only because radical young people who accepted the leftwards motion as natural were loud enough to force democrats hands on the matter. But thats just one example of how overall, it seems like being a liberal just means that you see the present as perfect and generally support expanding and continuing Republican policies until the radical younger generations succeed at moving the party an inch to the left. Then once its safe, Democrats will support that slight leftwards shift only after they know for certain that the idea has permeated enough of the Republican Party as well.
