June 11, 2019 Several congregations from the New Independent Fundementalist Baptist Church (the NIFB) will host their Make America Straight Again conference at the location and on the anniversary of the PULSE Nightclub shooting.

With plans to convene at Revival Baptist Church (320 US-27 Clermont Florida) on June 14-16, the organizers of the conference have been secretive regarding their exact itinerary, however they are clear on the reason for their chosen dates. The NIFB are vocal proponents for not only bigotry against and marginalization of the LGBTQ+ community, but also for government-enacted capital punishment of its members.

For this reason they have chosen to hold their conference in Orlando during Pride month on the Anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shooting to not only publicly celebrate the anniversary of the tragic deaths of the 49 people who lost their lives that weekend, but to advocate for more. This specific religious sect are vocal regarding their ownership of weapons and ammunition, as well as their proficiency in their usage. They also reference their familiarity with both conceal-and-carry and stand-your-ground legislation in the state of Florida, raising serious concerns that there may be violent escalations during their planned public activities surrounding the PULSE anniversary.

I don't know. I don't particularly like those kinds of emotions when I encounter them. Aping the toxicity of those we dislike isn't really the future I had in mind for us. I'm maybe looking for something closer to the Pink Panthers or the rioters at Stonewall. Or secretly subversive codes like a non-kinky hanky code, so the initiated know where the allies are.

I just can't see us going hard into militarization. Like, the 'gun fetishization as penis envy' metaphor is so good at describing the motivations behind homophobia. It cuts right to the truth of their hang ups, and we get to have all the fun with it because our personal experiences often tells us all that baggage is BS and we can let it go. And so much of our history is about learning new ways to assert ourselves that don't rely on old models of violence, even if those methods are often emotionally unsatisfying. I really don't want to see us walk backwards into our own critique.

@hollow_shrine I get what you mean and I sympathize 100% but I'm starting to feel like peaceful methods don't work very well for the most part. The homophile movement tried to use peaceful methods and it didn't go anywhere. Straight people didn't take the LGBT community seriously until they started fighting back, like in Stonewall.

It's true these ideas have no place in a modern society. But even the throwing of bricks and shotglasses only plays well when the other side has already put physical violence on the table.

We can write letters to the city to try and get the permit pulled. We can disrupt the conference by attending it and then heckling the speakers and displaying signs to onlookers that undermine the goals of the conference. With more time you might could have planned a block party or benefit across the street to try and draw the attention of the public away from conference. And finally you can take the Anifa approach, get the names and faces of attendees, and get people fired.

These are all great ideas! Only one I think won't work is going to the conference to heckle them since this church claims to be armed.

I'm pretty sure "Thou Shalt Not Kill" doesn't have an amendment saying "unless they make fun of you" but these guys don't seem like Biblical scholars.

Well, the Neo-Nazis who crashed that Pride event in Detroit last weekend all obscured their eyes with sunglasses. Presumably the cowards took those precautions because they wanted a life to go home to after vomiting their hate all over everyone. I'd be surprised if the members of this church were that organized/cautious.

Depends on the wording of the statements. There are very specific rules for when words become actions. Saying "I hope more people go out and slaughter gay people" is covered by free speech. Saying "You should go out and shoot gay people" falls under the call to action exception to the first amendment, and is not covered. In fact, if they go out and shoot gay people, you're guilty of the crimes they committed.

Neo-Nazi's have been using that fine line for decades now. It's why the KKK rarely gets arrested for their speech. They talk about what they hope you'll do, and not tell you what you should do.

That being said, I haven't read their actual statements, so who knows.
