I haven't played Super Mario RPG in probably 20 years, but I remember there being a quote on the very opening home base and someone (Toad? Peach?) saying there was a key or something on the island. So I walked around bumping into shit on the first overview looking for something while thinking that's what they meant.

Never blocked in fighting games

Sometimes I would focus all on warriors and not on mages.

In FF7, I used to prioritize my weapons by attack power, rather than materia slots, and I would prioritize my materia by instantly putting summons on every character, which I would then instantly use in battle. Its hard to imagine, but I used to make it pretty far with those misconceptions of gameplay.

I would do the same thing with my Pokmon and have all four of the same type of attacks. No variety. I also didnt realize for a while that there was a difference between attack and special attack.

I remember getting a legit Mew from toys r us.

It can learn anything.

Slapped on some HMs because I'm a dumby. Now my red cartridge has a legit HM slave mew, unless the save is gone. I know the battery is no doubt toast, but forget if the save is wiped by that. Probably for the best.

I didn't want to ruin my other already ruined pokes that had terrible movesets similiar to the original post.

Other than that I suppose the whole focus on lots of damage/firepower with no planning/support/defense/etc in rpgs and the like. Combine it with trying to rush through lead to some bad times.

I've probably done far more stupid stuff as an adult, TBQH.

Me and my flatmates got carried away with a dog while i was visiting a town in an RPG (i forget which).We'd repeat every thing it said when you interacted with it, until it said "ARF! ARF!" when we'd all cheer raucously.

So for about an hour, all you heard coming from the lounge was a group of people going:

Woof woof!
Bark bark!
Woof woof!
Growwwlll...
Woof woof!
Woof woof!
Growwwlll...
Bark bark!

YAAAAAAAAY!

Woof woof!
Growwlll...
Bark bark!

YAAAAAAAAY!

...and so on.
We may also have turned it into a drinking game.

Failing at Vargas in FF6 for over an hour straight because I thought I was supposed to input Sabin's blitz commands after the animation started and just thinking my controller was messed up or that I wasn't hitting the buttons fast enough. It took me way too long to realize I was supposed to input the button commands before hitting the confirm button the final time.

Not recognizing a stalemate until I'm hours into one.

The most memorable example of this was when I was playing Heroes of Might & Magic III:
I was playing the Warlords scenario (one of the largest maps) against several Computer players on Hard mode. After 2-3 hours the northern 40% of the map was controlled by me, the southern 40% by the only remaining Computer player and the middle 20% was basically a buffer zone that switched ownership every two weeks of in-game time.

No matter what tactic I applied, the situation remained like this. If I focused on attack, I'd leave one or two castles exposed to an attack. If I focused on defense, no ground would be lost or gained. If I balanced between attack and defense, neither would be enough to be effective. And neither the Computer nor I generated enough resources to create an effective army for more than two heroes at the same time.

Unfortunately I was too stubborn to admit we were literally evenly matched, until I looked outside and noticed night has shifted into morning.
Incidentally this was also my longest gaming session ever (a little over 8 hours straight), pausing only for bathroom breaks or getting a drink.

The first time I tried to save in Secret of Mana, I must have hit the wrong button and backed out rather than save the game, and so the game didn't get saved and I had to start over next time. I guess I interpreted this as being the game's fault, so after that I always saved twice to make sure that it worked.

That poor dude in the bathroom in MGS1 got every imaginable thing done to him multiple times.

Kneck snapped? Check.
Nikita missiled? Check.
Randomly punched (and then I would run away)? Check.
C4'd? Check.
C4 on the back? Of course.
Claymore mined? Check?
Thrown repeatedly until he was on the ladies' room? Check.

Also, I tried for hours to get the PSG-1 early. Hours and hours. You can go through locked doors without equipping the appropriate card by manipulating guards, but try as you might, it's not possible unless you have the card in your possession.

The Tekken movelist gives you the buildimg blocks for combos, including the 10 strings. You can learn them but that's not meant to be the ultimate goal.

No I mean just in the game. But I thought that it was a real combo, as in landing the first hit guaranteed the rest would connect. But in reality the chain is escapable so its not a legit combo :<

Not being able to beat Breath of Fire 3.

I got to that one area before the fight against Teepo. The statue there kept talking about praying, and I tried everything except the standing still for a little bit to progress. I became convinced I encountered some kind of glitch, so I started fresh.

When I finally figured it out after a few years I facepalmed.

That moving boat in the jungle level in Mario Kart 64? My cousin and I spent hours trying to land on it..
If I remember correctly, all of our effort was just to learn that even if you manage to land on the deck without smashing into the wall, you still just take damage and land in the water.

We learned an important lesson that day: The answers you uncover in science are not always what you want to be true..

Cartridge tilting? Main one was Goldeneye, I think, for the infamous "GEDDAN" effect.
