The thing I missed most about windows phone.

If I got a text windows phone would ask immediately if I want to hear it and if I want to respond without me having to ask it.

And somehow we are working back around to actually talking on the phone. Just in a slower manner with more steps involved.

If an emergency happened I would like to know while driving or when plans are happening while I'm driving. This way I'm not distracted and don't need to look at my phones. Some of us just don't live in our rooms

the idea that using technology to our advantage is a bad thing is what they mean. you can't read a text while driving, but having your car read it back to you is fine. its no different than listening to a song or audio book. For people who commute a lot it becomes a convenience thing. To view that as a bad thing is pretty insufferable to me.

I think it should be proven that listening to a text doesn't impair driving before we do something like this. Also, it should be looked into whether or not hearing a text could prompt someone to text back immediately (while driving).

What about talking to other people in the car, or listening to the words on the radio?

Should listening to an audio book while driving be banned? Its basically the same engagement. Talking hands free is the same engagement too. now you're right, if the person picks up their phone and physically texts back they're in the wrong, and we have laws against that, but being able to hear the text while driving so they can decide if they need to pull over and take action or if a response can wait isn't a terrible thing.

Yeah I don't really get it. Some people definitely are too attached, but that has no bearing on something just being useful and convenient. Just because you can opt to wait until the car is stopped doesn't mean you have to force yourself to do that when there is a better option.

I notice I do drive better when im alone and have zero distractions. Mythbusters did a episode on this. Though I feel they went about it weird. Talking on a hands free device but having the person ask them math questions and shit like that.

Basically what I got out of it was anything thats gonna make you have to really think before responding can distract you from driving.

Radios should be removed and children and passengers should be put out with knock out gas to prevent distractions. People's heads should be on a swivel to prevent looking up or down but only to the sides

Never said any of that. But i will straight ignore a passenger talking if there is a lot going on around me and im trying to pay attention and what they are saying requires a more thought out answer.

Plus you failed to read the part where I said things that make you think. Radios generally dont do that.

Listening to traffic updates on the radio can lead to reduction in paying attention according to an article published in the ScienceDaily (the complex task was listening to a traffic update on the radio):

Drivers undertaking the complex task were also worse at obeying road signs, remembering which vehicle had just passed them and even at driving itself. Their speed, lane position and reaction times to hazards were all affected.

It's a short article I found by using Google. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/04/160427081751.htm

What concerns me is that I know people who just have to respond to texts the moment they get them. It seems like it would be much easier if they weren't reminded of a text by hearing it from their car.

If these people you're claiming to know are that far gone already, I'm pretty sure the notification sound will remind them...why be against something that could at least make it make a little safer?

I'm hoping they can kick the habit someday, but if they hear the texts over the car, I think that would be harder to do. I'm not completely against the technology, especially if it ends up being safer (that would be great), but I have reservations. I think there's a chance more people could become like these people if someone is talking to them rather than just being alerted of a text.

I was curious about the effects of music on driving and I found this: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/06/130606101550.htm

Music has little effect and may actually help driving skills (it also depends on the person somewhat). I didn't know that.
