This 9-year-old boy is now cancer-free after undergoing a cutting-edge stem cell transplant that used a donated umbilical cord.

Jenson Wright was first diagnosed with lymphoma in November 2013 when he was just 4 years old.

The brave youngster managed to beat the deadly disease following several rounds of chemotherapy, but the cancer returned for a second time and medics discovered he was now battling acute myeloid leukemia and the cancer was more aggressive than ever, spreading to 70% of Jensons body.

Jenson, who is from Penketh, England, underwent two more rounds of chemotherapy, but unfortunately, it didnt work as they had hoped. The only remaining option for the youngster was a life-saving stem cell transplant using an umbilical cord from Texas which had been stored in a freezer for an unknown amount of time.

After he underwent the operation in December 2016, doctors were shocked to find that he had incredibly responded to the treatment in just five days. More than two years after the transplant, Jenson has now been told he is completely cured of cancer.

His 46-year-old mum Carolyn said: It came completely out the blue, it was a complete shock. It was quite emotional when they said it because you never expect to hear those words when youve been going through so much.

Jenson took it in his stride he was quite blas about it really. I dont think the severity of the illness he had has ever really hit him. Were quite fortunate because he was so young at the time he was diagnosed, so he didnt really understand it like an adult would.

Its always in the back of your mind, wondering what the tests theyre doing are going to find. Thats why it was such a shock when they said he was cured, and that they didnt want to see him again its a bit surreal really. He can just be like any other child again now.

Jensons cancer battle started when his mum noticed a swelling on the side of his face in the rear-view mirror while driving. After various tests and X-rays, they were told to bring Jenson back for an urgent biopsy.

When the results came back, he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer, minutes after he had started school.

Jenson started treatment straight away and underwent nine months of intensive chemotherapy. He lost his hair, his face and body were swollen, he was constantly hungry, and he experienced angry mood swings.

Now that the stem cell treatment has cured his cancer, however, Jenson has been going from strength to strength.

A 2013 study that was published in the scientific journal Blood says: Umbilical cord blood is an alternative stem cell source for patients with hematologic diseases who can be cured by allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation.

Initially, umbilical cord blood transplantation was limited to children, given the low cell dose infused. Both related and unrelated cord blood transplants have been performed with high rates of success for a variety of hematologic disorders and diseases in the pediatric setting.

Another article from Lancaster University says that pregnant women should talk to a medical professional about donating their umbilical cords

We will never get to find out who the donor was, but by donating it, theyve given life to somebody else, said Carolyn. In the last two years, weve managed to get our lives back to some normality. Hes actually got different DNA now because of the stem cell transplant hes basically been reborn again

Umbilical cord of a dude in Texas helped a kid in the UK kick cancer's ass.

This is an example of how much humanity and civilization can rock when we work together

The sad thing is that the only real exaggeration here is the timescale.

It's actually a valid question Peter is asking v_v

Great, but I want to know how that actually happened. They used a clump of regenerative cells to kill... clumps of regenerative cells?

Yeah pretty much

Research indicates that most, if not all, cancers arise from cancer stem cells. Cancer stem cells make up only a small percentage of the cells in a solid tumor or in leukemias, making them hard to find and difficult to target. In the last decade scientists have been able to isolate leukemia stem cells as well as brain, prostate and breast cancer stem cells.

Conventional cancer therapies target rapidly dividing tumor cells, but cancer stem cells lay dormant and survive chemotherapy and new molecularly targeted therapies. At some point, the cancer stem cells begin to self-renew and differentiate, creating a new tumor or leukemia cells and the cancer begins to grow again.

Researchers at the Broad Stem Cell Research Center have made remarkable inroads in studying cancer stem cells. Their findings and ongoing projects address possible treatments as well as diagnosis and prevention.

Potential breakthrough stem cell treatments identified by our faculty include:

Helping the bodys own cells fight cancer by engineering, through stem cells, a cancer-fighting immune system. This strategy places T cell receptor genes into stem cells to generate a patients renewable source of lymphocytes to fight disease.

Identifing the molecular and genetic mechanisms that cause normal blood stem cells to become cancerous, which could lead to new therapies that target leukemia stem cells and kill the early cells that give rise to mature cancer cells.

Developing screening methods that will match specific drug treatments with patients with brain, ovarian and colorectal cancer based on molecular and genetic response to the therapy and avoiding trial and error.

More like they help the bodies own immune system kill cancer cells

I would be more impressed if an old 9 year old boy was cured of aggressive cancer thanks to stem cell research tbh. Still, good news.

We could also cure deafness and blindness, not just cancer. But conservatives don't want to give a fucking inch on stem cell research because of the procedures involved.
