Just finished S5 and i thought it was ok but it wasnt bad.

More like the start of the downwards trend, since they ran out of source material, and the one they did have isn't that well regarded among the fans.

Season 5 had a lot of great stuff in it, but also a higher percentage of crap. I would also argue that they way they chose to not handle the plotline expansion from Feast starting in season 5 led to a lack of content in later seasons.

Been a while but connignton doesn't show up until 5 right? So I'm guessing either darkstar or UnCat but I'm guessing I'm missing something far more obvious.

I think the way they handled Dorne and the Ironborn were the biggest problems. Dorne should have been a major player instead of a filler arc for Jaime, and we only got a caricature of Euron, so there wasnt much in the way of conflicting motivations. Maybe Aegon was necessary for Dorne.

Well im half way through season 6 and whike there are some boring parts, its still a prerty good season so far.... Yet you guys said each season gets progressively worse after S5.

I like the whole series, but I can understand why people would complain about the decline in writing and the sudden fast pace. I think the creators knew they weren't really capable of sustaining the dialogue-heavy, slow-paced tone of the show without book source material so they just wanted to blast to the end and wrap while they were still on top. It worked, for what it's worth--the finale beat the Sopranos finale as the most-watched HBO broadcast of all time.

But a lot of people think the show started a slow (but accelerating) decline around season 5/6 when things started passing the books.

I loved it to the end, but...to each his own.

Hardhome was a top 10 episode but everything else in the season was shit. Dorne was arguably butchered more than any other story so far. Aryas story was boring and a waste of time. Euron was a god damn joke. The religious nuts in kings landing were insufferable. There was too much god damn Ramsey. Danys story went nowhere.

Season 8 was still worse but 5 is where the show starts going downhill.

I like S5 onward but it does suffer a little from not having as much book material to ride on. The characters just don't seem as clever as they used to be in S1-4, both in terms of their dialog and the broader chess game being played.

When I think of the highlights from S1-4, I think of all the fantastic conversations between characters where intellects collide. When I think of the highlights from S5-8, it's mostly the action I remember.

Objectively correct ranking, though the top three are interchangeable.

The major problems with the later seasons is that D&D have no idea how to write dialogue. The characters they were writing were smarter than them, so smart characters became dumb, well-developed characters acted out-of-character, character arcs were straight up butchered for the sake of plot, etc. They can only write cheesy melodrama and action scenes, which is how Id describe seasons 7 and 8.
