Most people who insist on the title regardless of context are likely either douchebags, insecure, or both.

Two of my neighbours are docs and both are just fine answering to their name.

I did laugh in University when profs would get butthurt because you didn't address them with the proper prefix.

It's mega Douchebag when they do it. I work Tech support for an electronic product and some of these guys actually put it in their support profiles.

The only thing more annoying are the customers who are electrical engineers. I would love once to ask them if they were involved in the design and manufacturing of our products, then tell them shut up and listen when they say No.

Could be he often did teach in full uniform including his gun on his hip. But I brushed that off as him having a shift right after his classes.

Are absolute douschebags.

If you cant run forward when someone is injured and people are yelling "is there a doctor in the house" it's completely inappropriate to claim the title of doctor.

Only when they are on campus, or otherwise in their realm of academia, should they be addressed as such. In that setting, the title is earned and the person deserves that respect.

Its insulting to orthopedics and surgeons.

On the other hand, I also find it mildly annoying when a doctor downplays the title to the point that you only learn they hold it when you've known them for years.

I don't want people getting full of themselves over it but it but it's a potentially interesting point of discussion and also kinda comes across as a "there's a Ferrari in my garage that I never drive and it's really kinda cluttering the place up" kind of deal. Hard to explain it better than that, lol.

I can top that.

There were coaches at my school who insisted you call them "Coach [Last Name]" no matter the situation. In class (some were teachers, and this applied even if you weren't in any kind of sport) and out in town. One even signed his name as "Coach [Last Name]."

Shitbags do that or those who want to keep the "prestige" of having a doctorate

But it's also not hard to just call them by their preferred title like you would with someone's preferred nickname/gender pronoun.

No.

She did it cause it's a joke school and she wanted to be called doctor.

Hence why its embarrassing.

I've never and would never insist on anyone referring to me as "Dr" in any setting even though I do hold a professional doctorate. Rather, if I'm signing anything that pertains to my profession or if I'm sending work-related email, then I may just add the degree name after my name along with my other credentials.

None of my bank checks, bills, etc. have "Dr" anywhere on them.
