Tough but I think TTYD takes the cake.

No wrong answer IMO though

I have a bit more nostalgia for 64, but TTYD is objectively better in all ways. Funnily, the one I want to replay the most for some reason is Super though.

Generally speaking, TTYD is more fleshed out both from a mechanical and narrative standpoint. The one thing the original definitely does better is more open-ended exploration (Dry Dry Desert, Jade Jungle). My overall vote goes to TTYD.

TTYD has way too much backtracking, gimmicky bullshit, and needless padding

PM64 without a doubt. TTYD is great, but 64 wins out because there's not a single Chapter I dislike in 64 + I prefer the soundtrack style.

64 is good fun, from start to finish

TTYD is weak in the middle (chapter 4 and 5) but has a Superior battle system

IMO 64 has the better story, but TTYD has the better gameplay. TTYD barley beats 64 for me.

ttyd has a deeper, more nuanced battle system but the structure and pacing of the game takes a huge hit
and of course, the game is way too easy for the improved battle system to ever show itself

This. Even though TTYD was great the first time, I had zero desire to ever attempt replaying it due to those factors. I liked 64 better to begin with, but Ive also replayed it at least 3 times.

i think part of the reason TTYD is less replayable is because in addition to the obvious backtracking nightmares, the game is also very reliant on its excellent writing and subversion of the typical mario universe. but on replay when you don't have the same novelty you start to notice just how shallow some of the level design in chapters actually is.

chapter 3, as beloved as it is, is incredibly condensed and takes place entirely in one locale. there's really nothing going on there outside of battles or cutscenes.

this also is just a hunch but the levels in TTYD felt smaller. it's why i think there's so much backtracking in the game, essentially to disguise it. i don't know if the game was rushed or not but chapter 4 is the most obvious example. creepy steeple feels like something that they didn't get to finish so they decided to pad the chapter length with the infamous backtracking. i'd say they made the best of it if that was the case because the identity stuff with doopliss is brilliant, but it definitely could have been done in a less tedious manner

TTYD.

64 had the better overworld/map/chapter structure in general, but that's pretty much it. TTYD's better gameplay/mechanics and characters trump it.
