So it's quite well known that abortion bans don't really reduce abortion rates, usually it just means they're carried out in an unsafer fashion.
If people really cared about preventing abortions, they might think to encourage people to have their babies instead of penalizing abortion. Let's toy with the thought that a lot of abortions happen because it's too expensive to carry the baby to full term. No paid maternity leave, staggering medical bills, documented discrimination in the workplace so your career options get hurt, good school costs a ton, another mouth to feed, etc. One way to encourage people to actually have babies would be to help make it actually affordable, no? I mean, if you really really care about the unborn baby, that is...

there are a million things that could be done along these lines but that would probably be communism in the US so just gotta go with the totally non governmental intervention position of uhhhhh banning people from getting abortions in a safe and legal way

Good ideas! Here's another one:

Comprehensive Sex Education. Mandatory in schools and starting at like fifth grade. Average age of menarche is 12.5 in the U.S., so you need to teach the kids how to properly protect themselves before they can actually get pregnant/get someone else pregnant. Do not separate the boys and girls. This separation nonsense is how we get grown people thinking that ectopic pregnancies can be "re-implanted" (they absolutely cannot) or that "it's okay if you only put the tip in" (you can absolutely get pregnant from "just the tip).

Gee, I wonder which states typically oppose comprehensive sex education, consistently rank near the bottom in childhood education, and try to outlaw abortion. Hmm...

I feel like "safe abortion" is a misnomer. It's certainly not safe for the baby

The way I see it, God gave us the ability to get abortions.

It's quite safe, actually; modern medicine is wonderful like that.

Professionally supervised abortion is safer than giving birth.

Abortions can be dangerous if done wrong, that is true.
But if done right, there should be no problem.

Thanks for clearing up the intentional misunderstandings from Mako.

And you raise an incredibly good point in sex ed! It is of course essential, as is accessible methods of birth control.

before the abortion referendum in Ireland last year, one pro life tactic was to say how instead of legalising abortion we could improve conditions for mothers and children throughout the country and it was like...why can't we do both my guys

Ofc once they lost they were nowhere to be seen suggesting such things!

Personally, I think better sex education would be preferable to incentivizing carrying a pregnancy to term. We're already en route to reaching an equilibrium regarding birthrates.

I think both sound like good ideas. Getting a kid shouldn't bankrupt someone.

but they've just argued that we should improve the conditions for mothers and children in the country instead of legalising abortion: why can't they continue to fight for that after the fact? Just makes them look like spiteful morons, trying to bait voters in supporting them by pretending they care about anything but moralising over fetuses

Why do things to make people less likely to get abortions or have unwanted children when you can just scream at women, call them murderous whores, and give them less bodily autonomy than corpses?
