I'm especially curious about year measurements BC; I assume the Greeks didn't say "oh, it's the year 440 BC now"

From a Louis CK skit:
Hey, what year is it?

Its three.

Yeah, but Im 28. How can I be 28 if theres only been three?

Oh, well, see, you were born in BC 24. And theres a zero. Remember it went backwards?

Oh, shit. That was stressful. I hated those years.

What was that like?

What year is it?

Ten.

What year is it now?

Nine.

What the fuck is gonna happen?!

People kept track of many different time measurements for a long time, probably around 3000 years ago at least, but we didn't start the "modern" count of years until the Julian Calendar in 45 B.C. It was later reformed as the Gregorian Calendar in 1582.

But did the Greeks or Egyptians have their own counts? Like, the Chinese do!

They didn't realize how long a year lasted so they couldn't number them until the 1600s iirc

A lot of ancient calendars numbered the years by how long a monarch had reigned, the so called regnal year

For example, we would call this the third year of King Trump I
