I was one of those kids. At least I never got fat. We always had something in the cupboard to eat I just was too lazy to cook for myself so I ate at school.

I dont really like eating though. If I could never get weak from not eating but had to give up my taste buds I'd do it in a heartbeat. I basically don't eat until I start feeling the physical symptoms of hunger like decreased mental ability and sluggishness

Yeah I kinda made sure to point that out for a reason, so nobody took it like I was looking for a pity party. Hence the bit about being lazy. Sorry if it came across that way.

The term "go hungry" has always bugged me. How do they define it? Everyone gets hungry during the day. Going to sleep hungry is pretty common if you intermittent fast, or just decide to not snack at night. If you're talking about parents who simply don't provide ANY food for their kids, then they should be arrested.

I'd much rather hear the numbers on kids who are malnourished.

I know it happens but I feel 1 in 6 is a bit high of a number. then again while i've been poor i've never been truly at the bottom so idk. sounds like parents fucking up though, cause if you are that bad off surely you qualify for assistance. some people are just too proud I guess to sign up for it, or just too dumb. then other cases I guess parents are well enough of enough but blow the money on stupid shit. either way I see it as horrible parents.

As someone already asked. What is the definition of "go hungry" here? Who is defining that term?
Because many of these random government agencies may define that as not having what they conclude to be a "balanced" meal. A meal with too much sugar. A meal lacking veggies. Cereal instead of sandwiches. Etc.

Because the way I define that is literally going to bed without eating anything. Your stomach hurts from not eating. The classic definition of it.

But I'm willing to bet that's not how they're defining it.

more or less what I was getting at. I don't mind immigration, but I feel we should be a lot more selective until we get our own shit handled. by selective I mean people that can actually be productive and earn their own way once here.

nah they'd get apartments paid by taxpayers.

I used to work construction so not to stereotype but it was the truth where I worked saw a lot of mexicans. but at least they where earning their money. so that I don't mind, my only problem was talk to them about what they got payed and you'd find they often where getting fucked on pay compared to what I and others made. no wonder a lot of those houses where getting built crappy, for that pay they where just going for pure speed since they got paid by the house.

pretty much got told by one of the supervisors for the company I was under, that the mexicans where pretty much for speed and the crew I was on, was for quality, when the mexicans houses couldn't at least be passed off on inspections we'd come in and fix the fuck ups. how about just pay them to do quality work? sure the people paying 300+ thousand dollars all the way up to a few million in that town, wouldn't mind a extra little wait for the houses to be worth what they paid.

sorry rant went a little off the rails there.

Actually, underweight people also have increased risks of diabetes and a few other things like kidney or liver issues because it turns out we need a certain level of fat in our bodies to operate properly. :l Can't really win unless you're in that golden range.

I don't think weight matters, I damn near gave myself diabetes, and i'm not even fat let alone obese. not underweight either though.

though I guess increased risk is different than just me eating/drinking way too much sugary shit for too long a period of time.

Google tells me the meaning behind that stat is:

More than 12 million children in the United States live in "food insecure" homes, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). That means those families don't have enough food for every family member to lead a healthy life. This doesn't always mean that there is nothing to eat. But it can mean that children get smaller portions than they need, or parents aren't able to afford nutritious foods.

So it's really not "go hungry" in the same sense as it is for starving children in Africa. It's more like they can't afford Whole Foods so they have to eat Mac and Cheese every night. In other words, First World problems.

No, that's not mac and cheese at night. It'd be more like cheap food and soups if the child could cook to literally nothing.

Mac and Cheese is cheap food. Duh. The fact remains, mass child starvation is not a crisis in the US. Eating like shit is but that's not quite the same thing.

I would have expected this statistic to be pulling from the issue of kids who essentially rely of school lunches for most of their meals, but this is still an issue. Just because it could be worse, doesn't magically make the situation better. Proper nutrition is pivotal for physical & mental development, something that is quite relevant to grade school children. Poor diet habits can impact health, performance in school, & ability to fight diseases.

Parents should teach kids smart eating habits. Absolutely. It's just so misleading to give it this "go hungry" label. Do that and you get people like the TC who actually thinks 1 in 6 American children are starving.
