There very well could be a sequel after Part II (and there is one obviously), but there is no need for one. The bouncing back and forth in the timelines really does a good job of showing the differences between Michael and Vito and why Michael could never really achieve his goal of being as beloved as his father while still accomplishing the same thing. Not to mention the "IT WAS AN ABORTION MICHAEL" scene is some of the best acting i've ever witnessed.
