235 through 278 (44 songs) HAVE BEEN RANKEd........only 234 left to go!!!!

SPREADSHEET: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1thrbGtmfZFFz-TGGmFD2xCUTRed-qzGrBBjVsHLFZnE/edit?usp=sharing

ARCHIVE OF PREVIOUS TOPIC (thank you zyx): http://zyxyzarchive.x10host.com/index_mycrorank.html

CURRENT STANDINGS AND AVERAGE RANKING BY USER:
SkpBWOR

CURRENT SPREAD VISUAL CHART THING:
LHV1lOn

278 songs were nominated by 39 different "board=8" users. these pieces of music were nominated with the intent for me to listen to them and RNAK them...so I have done that now!

note 1: this selection was INSANELY good, WOW. i could tell almost everyone tried to pick stuff that they thought I would like. KEEP THIS IN MIND Because this makes stuff that in a normal selection of random vgm would be like "in the top 30" or whatever literally in the 100s here. On a typical random selection of vgm you'd get on here the threshold for "I like this" would not start anywhere near this far down the list. So Thank You Everyone and don't be sad if you get too low.....even the very lowest ranked stuff I thought was worth my time to listen to!!

note 3: if you are not someone here who knows me already, expect these placements to be strange. my taste in music is known for being pretty weird here so these rankings are pretty far off from anything i expect anyone else to agree with. ALSO my write-ups tend to be overly detailed/technical just because that is how i think. and i tend to just stream of consciousness ramble into nonsense nonseqtuitor zone because i think it is fun. so if you're not already expecting this...expect some insanely long writeups that are basically impossible to read for a lot of this

note 5: the spreadsheet has TIERS on it shown beforehand. which are just...relative indicators of how much I like it so here is a rundown

MAGENTA TIER: 1-43 - contenders for favorite vgm of all time in some way, the kind of stuff I'd cite as like "this is my favorite song from [soundtrack I like]". like if someone asked me "what are some of your favorite video game songs" or wanted a good example of my taste in music I might pick from any of these ones ("9.0 - 9.9" as far as my typical rating scale descriptions go)

PURPLE TIER: 44-112 - I LOVE these, I'd put these on a CD mix or personal playlist or at least would go out of my way to listen to these whenever. ("8.0 - 8.9")

BLUE TIER: 113-189 - I actively LIKE these. I would not necessarily put them on a cd/playlist or go out of my way to listen to them, but if they came on some "video game music" radio or what ever i'd be like "aw yeah cool THAT song" or something. ("7.0 - 7.9")

GREEN TIER: 190-245 - I get some level of enjoyment out of these! I wouldn't say they're songs I particularly like, but I at least get something out of it and think cool stuff happens in them or something ("6.0 - 6.9")

YELLOW TIER: 246-262 - I don't mind listening to them, but I don't get enjoyment out of listening to them either. ("5.0 - 5.9")

ORANGE TIER: 263-273 - I would rather be not be listening to music than listening to these. Dislike enough to always want them to end and to turn them off, but there's still things here and there to redeem them that I do enjoy. ("4.0 - 4.9")

RED TIER: 274-278 - I really dislike listening to these and there's very little redeeming about them. or if there is "something redeeming about them" it doesn't make up for whatever i hate about it anyways ("0.0 - 3.9")

234th
Game: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Title: Main Theme (E3 2018 Version)
Composer: Hideki Sakamoto
Nominator: AndywoodCubeGmr
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC83pBZ0Z2I" data-time="

so part of why I broke the topic right here and didn't make a few more posts in the other topic is because this specific song was up next and seemed like a GOOD FIRST SONG FOR NEXT TOPIC song because it is a MAIN THEME

So I think I hinted at this before in some conversations with people on board 8, without being too clear on what I meant, but this is perhaps THE biggest misplacement in the entire list (it would be somewhere in blue tier, if not low purple tier, if I redid this ranking now). but I promised myself I wouldn't change the rankings once I started posting them because I could reorder them infinitely and have opinions change every single time. so they're locked into what they are now.

I think part of why it needed to grow on me was because I knew it was Hideki Sakamoto/noisycroak, and I have high expectations for him/them because I'm a pretty big fan of their work I guess. Especially pokemon mystery dungeon (of which Sakamoto only did some portion of pmd2, but based on style I imagine it's a number of my favorite tracks in the game), but other things too. Since this didn't meet those "high expectations" I was like "aaaa it's a DISSAPOINTMENT" and all that, because it had the potential to be easily my favorite main theme of smash and whatever.

but when I distance myself from that high-expectation distortion of opinion, I actually do think it...is maybe my favorite main theme of a smash now. Very closely contended with melee main theme though...which isn't surprising because it's hirokazu ando and I've already expressed liking his style (and well I like smash 64 opening/credits/etc more than even that for the same reason because that is also him... not sure that even counts as a "main theme" or if that game could be considered to have one anyway)

I think what makes this stand out to me is that it does the thing that's most likely to be emotionally gripping to me...normalize abrupt jarringly different chord changes to the point that every other chord is using many notes that would make the melody sound wrong in the previous chord at some parts. it's subtle in presentation here compared to other examples like modern fire emblem or zan-zan-zawa-veia or whatever though. That might sound like an arbitrary technical thing to be excited about, but it's the thing that emotionally moves me the most. Chord changes like these in many parts can make me FALL OVER. on top of that, tons of sus chords and 7th chords which I always love the big full 'spacious' sounding nature of. The melodic line weaves its way around this intricacy in a smooth way, but it almost never feels predictable to me.

I guess the melody on its own for the most part is just normal diatonic e minor, but the CHORDS around it play with big cool \[];56\][ygsd96866. one example is whenever there's an Fmaj7 (or similar) chord at the parts where the melody holds out the e like at :16. I think this is more pronounced in the non-e3 versions, and for that reason I like those versions more. still though the stuff I like IS here, and makes this theme effectively dramatic and emotionally INTENSE to me.

another easier-to-notice and more concrete example is right at the beginning honestly, the second chord enforces the scale to be e dorian at the start rather than e minor, so you get that C# rather than C, and everything is based around that, even though there's these immediate shifts to clear e minor right after. the chord changes themselves are a pretty abrupt jump from that i to the IV in terms of how I perceive it. I rarely expect to hear that immediately after a minor i I guess and the melody highlighting that feels COOL

[...continued]

It's not necessarily /that/ weird or complex, but definitely more playful with that kind of stuff than most vgm

This theme comes across to me as a lot less conventionally "epic" than the melee/brawl main themes, while still retaining the same intensity and emotion to me and I think that's why I like it. a lot things those two do feel cheesy to me (even if I really do like the melee main theme) but this evokes the same emotion without having coming across like the stereotype of anything in specific imo

but...even with this holding that placement to me, I do think I like the melee main theme a lot more (wow what a surprise it's hirokazu ando), looking back at it. DEFINITELY like both this and that more than the brawl main theme though. cant believe there was a period for a while where I was like "this isn't as good as brawl main theme" somehow, I guess I just found it unmemorable or underwhelming but NOT ANYMORE

sorry this one is so MISRANKED. I said i'd put it somewhere in blue or low purple, think at this very moment I'd place it at like 153 but that certainly fluctuates. definitely ranging from 189 to like 100 depending on mood.

Shame to lose a song this early but glad you like it more than its actual ranking.

It definitely grew on me a lot too. I had it way under the Melee main theme at first but it definitely closed the gap over time.

I just realized I forgot that smash 4 exists so I did not put it in any comparison points...I like that main theme less than ultimate's main theme but more than brawl's so

in terms of main themes:
melee > ultimate > smash 4 > brawl

if something from smash 64 is considered the main theme for 64 that is probably at the top though

That'd be my ranking of Smash games, with Smash 64 in the middle.

I like the Ultimate theme a lot. When that big fanfare comes in at the end of the opening cinematic, where it does the big zoom out....I eat that shit up.

Its a lot of work. Speaking of which, @NFUN How goes your 1,000 song ranking. Its been several months and I havent heard much about it. Are you still making a list?

I told you it would take time. :P

I think I spent around 16 months just compiling/sorting/pre-ranking my list all before actually kicking off the official ranking on 4/20 last year! (And I've only dropped 500+ rankings so far)

It's a ton of work for sure and I'm glad to see that you haven't given up and are still working on your ranking. Definitely looking forward to it.

(I feel like an absolute nutjob for tackling my next ranking though which currently stands at over 3,000 Nes chiptunes. Truth be told, it'll probably be my last ranking ever lol.)

233rd
Game: Radiant Historia
Title: The Red Locus
Composer: Yoko Shimomura
Nominator: OrangeCrush980
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Js-kwdLIWyc" data-time="

this song is very sad ;-; GOOD . I have talked about how my opinion on shimomura music is very mood-dependent and right now I am luckily in a shimomura mood so I can actively enjoy this but when I am not in that mood I will probably think this is the most boring song that exists. This is not one of my favorites from this soundtrack, usually what I think of one of my lesser favorites of the ones I know well honestly but I don't dislike it. Still has that Dramatic Sad flair that I appreciate about it. Musically simple and tropey but focusing on the tropes that I sometimes like. A lot of times her music winds up feeling very "grey" to me like there's |nothing distinct about it, and honestly...? that's ok, that''s not necessarily a bad thing, just means it's harder to actually commit the tracks to memory even if I enjoy listening to them while I'm listening to them.

One time for a project in college for an audio production class I had to pick out music for a radio drama that I would be helping put together and I asked board 8 on the b8vgm aim for suggestions on what fit with the Sad themes explored in the thing in the THE thing and they gave me many suggestions but the one I wound up using in the end was "An Earnest Desire of Grey" from Radiant Historia. some people did not think it fit and other people thought it fit but that is what we used in the end ANYWAYS I think that's my first exposure to this soundtrack that I liked and although I may act like I'm lukewarm to it as a whole...I'm not, I like a lot of random tracks from it. The Red Locus isn't one of them but I don't dislike it, and I'm not neutral to it. It's kind of cool to me. so there. Low GREEN tier fits that.

The things that stand out most to me here are the chURCH organ like the angry church man is going to tear out my organs because it is very intimidating at times. also I like when the melodic line at :56 gets repeated but modulated up 3 semitones at 1:08. It's not a particularly "obvious" key change even though that's what it is. I like modulations, whether they're really blunt or obscured...this is something that /W0uld/ be blunt since it's just the same thing repeated but transposed up, but something about how it's presented doesn't feel that way to me, just feels like a casual moment of TRUCK (truth) THE SONG. it feels like it is just adding to the number of notes that the song can play which is the main reason I like key changes but especially when they're made casual like that, feels more free varied in terms of what it is capable of expressing and less like a child song.

1) hi yokonkonon soundorurna: bpaalink the boss umusic man song:

2) three

my favorite Radiant Historia song is "Memories of the World" (Which might actually be my 2nd favorite shimomura song period, I really like it, would've done well in this topic) and my 2nd favorite Radiant historia song is probably "An Earnest Desire of Grey" mostly because of the history (historia) lesson I have just given about when I was inside of the college so it is nostalgaic for when my life was bad (good) in 2011.

ALSO 233 IS MY FAVORITE NUMBER SO CONGRATULATIONS ON EARNING SLOT 233 THAT IS A SECRETLY IMPORTANT GOOD SLOT NUIMBER TO EARN IN THIS TOPIC

Keep in mind very few other users in VGMC have that kind of compatibility.

Man, and all three of these people nominated music in this topic! I think five of my six nominations are something Mycro would like (Engage the Enemy, on the other hand......). Given how amazingly compatible those four guys are, though,I think my chances of getting the highest average rank is pretty small. Actually, Gravity Man and Wind Never Ceases are probably both toast, as they have dominant V's in minor....
