Steins Gate is generally a good gateway anime for pretty much anybody.

Can't argue with S;G being a good watch, too. My favorite show.

utawarerumono is just really good to play

gets a very nice balance of vn scenes to strategy game stuff imo

has a couple of missable scenes at the very start but otherwise makes you view everything so it's close to fully kinetic, which I consider a good thing for beginners

Underwater Ray Romano for sure. It's longer when you consider the two games combined but probably structured/paced better with an average of 1 hour of reading for every 1-2 strategy battles (outside of the part where Anju is introduced, where there's more like 3 hours straight of slice of life scenes before the plot starts kicking in)

Steins gate, well it's not necessarily bad but I could see it be hard to get into for someone who has limited experience with vns or is impatient compared to something that has more gameplay elements, since a lot of stuff early on is written to set up stuff much later on than to stand on its own (the writer has admitted he's really bad about beginning stories and just kind of rambles on aimlessly) and it keeps introducing new plot arcs without resolving the old ones and forces you to go through all of what would be side character routes in other games before it starts wrapping up the main plot arcs.

(personally I think that Chaos Child is the best science series vn, although it's less accessible and appealing to a general audience so it's hard to recommend)

Utawarerumono has a remake of the first game coming out soon so definitely wait for that and play Steins;Gate first.

You should definitely wait on Utawarerumono to play the original game remake first if possible. It adds a lot to the other two (especially the 3rd).

So Steins;Gate first.

I can't see fatlus bothering translating the Ray Romano 1 remake at this point honestly, between sony going all v-giny all over everything now and it being a vn so it would be a lot of translation work for something that wouldn't sell very well.

Utawarerumono is really fucking good so I vote that. Mask of Truth probably in my top 5 games of all time.

It's still not as good as Steins;Gate imo, but it's way less popular so if I don't speak up there's probably not going to be a chance you actually get into that series.

For Utawarerumono, I watched the anime adaptation of the first game (which is good but does leave out one somewhat important detail) and played the Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth games. Though, I don't actually agree with people that you really need the first game (or anime) in order to experience the Mask games. There are connections, but it's more at the level of cameos than actual plot connections.

I never watched it, but I've been told that you should avoid the Utawarerumono: The False Faces anime (adaptaion of Mask of Deception) at all costs.

So many people here making terrible endorsements. Play the original utawarerumono first. It's good.

Well, if you can play the first Utawarerumono game I don't think there's any reason not to.

If you're like me and you can't read Japanese and won't play unofficial releases/translations, then that isn't exactly an option.
