I think it was more a rural/urban dialect thing than a laziness thing but yeah.

Cuz there was this guy named Clark would would ride his donkey all over the country and people kept telling him to get off his ass. Eventually ass and ass started being used interchangeably, all because of a guy and a donkey exploring the country together.

I sometimes wonder why words like chameleon, chemical, chimera, and character begin with a "k", when a "ch" typically denotes a "tch" sound.
