HBK was legit one of the most hated people in pro wrestling, but a lot of people didn't know that, and only saw him as the Showstopper

To answer your question, in kayfabe, Shawn was the ref in a match between Bret Hart and The Undertaker and during the match Bret spit in Shawn's face, he got pissed and went to hit him with a chair, but hit The Undertaker with the chair instead, and then had to make the pin because he had to call it strait down the middle (I think) or else. . .something. So The Undertaker came after Shawn the next night on Raw, Triple H helped him out, they started DX and were huge heels up until the night after WrestleMania 14 when Triple H took over and they started to become the, "we're too cool to be fucking heels," era of Pro Wrestling along with Austin, Foley and The Rock
