I thought for certain that Mortal Engines would be the big movie of the season and that the animated Spider-Man movie would become a cult film that a small contingent of fans heralded as the greatest. Kinda like how people say that Mask of the Phantasm was the best Batman movie.

I'm happy that Miles Morales is getting exposure, but I worry about what the success of an animated superhero movie may mean in the future. I'd hate for live action superhero movies to become dreary realistic movies while all of the fun stuff gets crammed into animated movies.

I'm a bit disappointed about Mortal Engines too. While it didn't look like my cup of tea, I was really thinking it'd be the next big thing. Just from the trailer alone, the protagonist looks like she has a lot of presence to her.

*shrugs*

The trailers told me all I needed to know about this stinker.

Why not?

It has a Harry Potter-esque look, an imaginative world, a revenge story, a female protagonist who appears to be a strong and engaging character (as opposed to one that is over-politicized), and the Lord of the Rings director at the helm.

It had all the credentials to be the next big franchise.
