Many years ago a bunch of my friends and I laid around on the floor under a massive 4:3 television and watched this on VHS, where Kubrick films had a taller image than when they where shown theatrically. He hated cutting off the sides to fit TVs like most movies were, so his movies were presented on VHS showing the entire square frame Kubrick shot on set. It was like watching it in IMAX that night. I'll never be able to recreate that experience.

Yeah but he has some real slurpers out there that will say he left the chopper shadow in a few frames on purpose and its something to do with how he faked the moon landing footage.

Jack Torrences descent into madness. In the book he kept trying to do right but eventually the hotel won. In the movie its more like Jack is already crazy and hates his family.

if Kanley Stubrick directed it instead of Stanley Kubrick, I think it would be a forgotten movie other than the fact it had a horrible performance by the lead actress.

Worst Kubrick movie IMO.

Kubrick got everything that mattered about The Shining right. Jack being manipulated by ghosts in the book isn't massively different than the movie, just in the book everything about it is obnoxiously on the nose whereas the movie portrays a man being pushed towards his worst urges much more interestingly. The original ending is also incredibly hammy with Jack's last minute redemption before the hotel blows up too.

The only thing I didn't care for was killing Halloran. It seemed needless

It's probably the only horror movie I love. I might like a few horror films (mostly old ones), but The Shining is something else.

While I never read the book, I sympathize with those who have and dislike the movie because of changes. I've been there many of times.

Everything except the important themes. It's supposed to be about a good man struggling with and falling to his demons.

That was far and apart the least interesting aspect of the book and handled terribly time and time again throughout it. The shining is a really frustrating book to read because all this haunting shit is happening but it's occurring around this hamfisted metaphor for alcoholism that just makes you want to groan.

Kubrick's take, which is that Jack didn't have all the child abuse and drinking baggage, but was just a weird guy that probably had awful shit in him this whole time that never managed to bubble to the surface, is more interesting. It's haunting and atmospheric and unnerving and you can't quite tell where Jack ends and the influence of the ghosts begins. In contrast to the book where there's endless laboring over every little thing Jack does, and by the end of it he's transformed into a literal screaming cackling demon.

I actually do like The Shining, I think it's probably one of the best things King ever wrote. It's the closest thing to an actual creepy ghost story he's ever written barring maybe Room 1408. But he just can't help himself and puts in things like killer hedge animals and a werewolf trying to suck Danny Torrence's cock and I lose all interest in any sort of faithful adaption to the story. Also, he tried very hard to strangle any bit of good will out of the story when he wrote Doctor Sleep. I can't wait for people who watched(or read) The Shing to see the upcoming Doctor Sleep movie and just have their jaws floored at how dumb Stephen King can get.

I don't know, I don't think he's quite as self-aware as he'd like to be.

Any of King's stories that aren't on the shorter side reliably turn really stupid. Something ridiculous always happens like Pennywise being opposed by a magic space turtle and turning into a spider, or Leland Gaunt being attacked by the main character sending out Stephen King Villains like Pokemon, or God smooshing Randall Flag with a giant hand, everything in the last two Dark Tower books, etc etc etc. He's incapable of writing long stuff that doesn't descend into grand nonsense.

That's why stuff like Christine and Cujo and Pet Semetary are his best books. He forgot how to write horror that didn't involve insane mythology meta-narrative nonsense
