Even back in the Sega days. They took the Sega Genesis and reverse engineered it so they could release games on it without paying licensing fees. They went to Sega and demanded some beneficial deals or they'd release how they did it to everyone which would potentially ruin the platform.

It would be interesting to read a book that chronicles all of the behind the scenes shit from EA over the generations.
