New game+ is fine.

Content locked behind new game+ is the ultimate cancer though.

I don't think the former's so bad, but locking content behind choices you can only make once per playthrough is ultimate cancer. See the golden armor you can forge in Tales of the Abyss: There are three different pieces of armor you can forge and you can only forge one piece of armor per playthrough. Fuck that shit.

branching paths are fine and even encouraged.

shit like enemies with more HP or different item placements are just a very cheap way of adding longevity and no different than adding stupid achievements like finding 50 different photo locations or pigeons or whatever.

Tetris

Probably the best example I could think of is this, though I'll admit the "x lines are already generated with one empty space in each" mode is amazing since good rng can give you a Tetris in the first quarter second and that's gosh darned amazing

Especially since a Tetris makes it so all line clears from that point on will have the blocks disappear a little faster

You're probably thinking of Symphonia, abyss didn't have anything like that. They DID have one or two "literally cannot get these in your first playthrough" things related to difficulty but that was it.

Of course, abyss was also the #1 biggest example in the series of why carrying over levels with the grade shop was a bad idea.

Symphonia doesn't need the stats since basically everything can be stunlocked and para balled to death which is more tp based than anything

But abyss only could let you get 1 tutti whatever things for the +4 in every stat as you level up, meaning it takes to playthrough 7 to optimally level up everyone without issue, playthrough 5 if you make sure to leave certain characters dead if somebody with it left the party for awhile and you can't swap it off of them

Nope, it's in Sheridan. Far left building when you enter from the south that has all of the merchants. Enter the door on the left and the guy who forges the armor is there.

I can confirm that you can't get multiple capacity cores. I've only gotten 1 Tutti over 11 playthroughs.

Also I just looked it up, sword and armor are exclusive to that and armor is the second strongest one for Luke or Guy, so it's the better option. Sword isn't anything super special but it's enough that getting it as early as possible can make a difference.

It still requires multiple playthroughs to complete the Collector's Book.

I think this is fine if it's something like a short indie game that takes a few hours or less to complete and is significantly different when you replay.

In a game that takes 50+ hours to complete, though, I agree it's terrible design.

That's the case with every tales game though

And 2 still beats the I think it was 3 (but realistically, 4) needed to get all titles in Symphonia

Eh, you can speed run the game in ng+ and finish the entire story in about 10-15 hours. Better yet, you only have to finish a side quest like that one for Guy's flight jacket the one time.

Wait what outfit was this? I played the game before NG+ was added

I agree though, pretty much any game with upgrades should have a new game+

Idk, its been forever, but there is an outfit

I love the concept of using all your armor/weapons in a new fresh playthrough, but dont lock content until ng+..

Ive run into a similar situation in ac odyssey w the oricalcum ore

Apparently, the ore is tied to the gamertag and not just to each save

Wow. Just wow. Now i only collect em til i have 100 for the weekly dlc item, shame i have to save half the map for my 2nd playthrough
