Yeah, read the first 3 and then part of that newer series. It's not that great imo, engaging enough for boredom at work but kinda bad otherwise. I would have liked it more when I was 13.

It's one of the best modern fantasy trilogies. A bit slow to pick up, but we'll worth sticking through.

It is great. The magic system is really deep and interesting. And the sequel series is good as well.

vin is my favorite fantasy heroine
i loved that trilogy
it spent a bit to much time on describing the parties and clothes
like 3 pages describing the dress vin was wearing at one point

but the action scenes are a lot of fun and i loved the characters

The whole thing, like I said. The deus ex machina of it all is dumb... I guess I can't really get into many details there without spoilers. The most interesting thing is hemallurgy. Also the evil guy's powers in the first book was pretty cool. The series had potential and like I said had some engagement, but falls flat in important places.

uh, how about.
Vin becoming a god so she could destroy a horde of magical orcs
or maybe
Sazed literally becoming God and fixing everything in the series

Deus ex machina refers to things being very sudden and generally unexplained occurrence, that doesn't apply here. Everything in Hero of Ages was well established within the entirity of the book, and we'll explained. There ARE things that happen in the books that aren't fully explained yet, but they're pretty minor things

Definition of deus ex machina
2 : a person or thing (as in fiction or drama) that appears or is introduced suddenly and unexpectedly and provides a contrived solution to an apparently insoluble difficulty

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/deus%20ex%20machina

"Explanation" is irrelevant here.

They're extremely well paced and some of the best fantasy around period right now, though.

Also, though it's a 10 book series, 1-5 and 5-10 are supposed to be fairly self contained, and there will be roughly a five year wait between books five and six

I read both trilogies. I loved the first trilogy and Vin. Yeah there are some parts that are kind of eh. But great characters and ending.

Second trilogy was pretty meh. Last book comes out next year so Ill see how it ends. But so far pretty average.

Stromlight Archive is my favorite so far.

Tbf, the second Trilogy wasn't meant to be a series originally, and does have the most emotional scene in the series imo. But mostly it's just light fun like old serials.

That isn't even how it works. They have to burn a metal that they have ingested, it doesn't last forever and they have to keep bottles around to replenish. Each type of metal has a different effect, and they obey the laws of physics. To fly one has to push and pull off of metal, size matters so larger objects make a huge difference between what happens when you push or pull on the metal. She literally starts out as the Mistborn, and can use all the powers, so not sure how it is a surprise that she can and is OP with the powers, though the lord rule is even more OP what with the other type of magic he can use.

No. They have to obey the laws of the Mistborn universe. The physics tie in was kinda eh. I mean, as soon as you're burning metal by eating it natural law is out the window.

BTW, if you do read Way of Kings, just know what you're getting into. I struggled immensely with that book because its 1200 pages and for a good 800 of those pages, it's a lot of build up and exposition. The last 300ish pages are really great and IMO worth the major slog of reading through.

It's not like the first 800 pages are necessarily bad, it's that they contain very few really great parts and all to much boring set up. Theres genuinely great stuff sprinkled in but the good shit is at the end.

LMAO, the only Deus ex Machina I can think of gets explained by the third book.
Also TC, most of Sanderson novels are connected. Theres a letter exchange in books 1 and 2 of The Stormlight Archive that directly references the events of the first Mistborn trilogy. I'd suggest startin with Mistborne is you want to get into Sanderson.

Yeah what I really like about Sandersons work is the cosmere stuff. Several novels are connected, sharing the same universe and lore. His character Hoid is one of few people who appears in several novels. There are plans for an origins novel that will eventually tie it all together.

The crossover stuff only ever occurs in the Stormlight Archives. Even then you don't really need to have read the other books to understand anything.

Yeah but that's not my problem with it. The problem I have with it is that it will lead back to the shitty plot devices in the other books.

I know. But the characters from those series crossover into Stormlight. Stormlight characters don't crossover into those other books, and those other books don't crossover into each other either. The only thing that crosses over into all of those other books is Hoid, and you can be completely ignorant of that and it doesn't matter much at this point either.

Yeah but his core Cosmere schedule that he set several years ago is getting more and more spread out. He keeps coming up with new series to write, and he says he has to write those to avoid burnout.
