it's when like for example a comic book tries to pander to a demographic at the expense of their core fans. and then NOBODY buys the comic book. most of the time SJW's don't actually buy the stuff they praise. when a company panders to them, they usually just celebrate it on facebook and talk about how cool it is....but never actually buy the product.

It is an issue that a friend of mine and I always discuss.

She feels that inclusion should be purposeful and making a statement. It isnt enough to just have an LBGTQ+ character, that should be a core part of their character, not just because.

I feel that every step forward is worthy of celebration and that if we need to take a thousand small steps instead of one big step, that is fine.

It's more to do with the quality of writing imo. Look at Michael C. Hall's character in Six Feet Under, for example. One of his defining character traits is that he's gay. A lot of his storylines revolve around him being gay. But it works fine because the writing and his acting are both really good.

reminds me of why i didnt get into riverdale, in the first half hour of the first episode there's so much emphasis on the gay guy being gay and finding archie hot it put me off from the show. (when i say so much emphasis, I must emphasize now that I mean generally all of his lines in that timeframe flanderize his character)

It's basically if the market decides that they don't want a bunch of pandering bunk, the product will fail/not do as well as it could have if it had just been normal. It's not the simple act of including something that can be described as "diverse", but the act of shoving it down people's throats, backlash against fans if it fails to actually fit the original narrative, and simply choosing virtue signalling regardless of how people view it. It's when they are pandering to a non-existent audience that it really shows, like the failure of a lot of the Marvel comics. It's also a factor in marketing as well like the female Ghost Busters. Having an all female cast isn't pandering, but the way they marketed it and blamed the poor reception of the movie on people hating women is the bad part. If it had been a superbly funny movie, then people would not have cared at all.

There are people who instantly react negatively to any instance of the most subtle inclusion of anything out of their "comfort zone", but they're the fringe minority of the opposite spectrum.

Two ways of looking at it:

1) People who identify as "woke" are usually the sort who consider themselves on "the right side of history" - and what better way to show how right you are by purchasing all kinds of Woke SWAG?

2) The "woke" people find an issue, and start seeing it EVERYWHERE. Kinda like how after you get a new car, you start noticing that model everywhere. In this case, broke is in regard to their sense of well-being and safety. They deal with this by breaking windows, roundhouse kicking people's cell phones, or by buying Woke SWAG (and let me tell you - masks are IN this season! get one before they're gone!)
