Thousands of Hungarians protested in Budapest on Saturday against a proposed new labor law that allows employers to ask for up to 400 hours of overtime work per year, a move its critics have billed as the slave law.

Members of trade unions and their supporters gathered under gray winter skies and marched waving banners like we protest against the slave law and force your mother to do overtime.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban has ruffled feathers in Europe and built a system his critics see as autocratic, forcing his will on business, academia, the courts and the media, but he has rarely angered large voter groups at once.

The last move that struck a nerve with so many people that it forced Orban to backtrack was a planned tax on internet data traffic, abandoned in late 2014 after tens of thousands marched against it.

The modification to the labor code submitted to Parliament this week has faced intense criticism, sparking the biggest street protest in over a year. Potentially, it could add two extra hours to an average work day, or the equivalent of an extra workday per week.

Police blocked off the main square outside Parliament, where the protest was headed originally, forcing the march to loop around the central Budapest area and fill Constitution Road, the main street leading up to Parliament.

We are all really upset about the way things are going in this country, Zoltan Laszlo, vice chairman of the Vasas ironworkers union, told Reuters. This government just makes laws with scant consultation of those affected.

Our health status is already abysmal. People who make these kinds of laws work against society. Well show them that we can take our fate into our own hands. We are willing to turn a lot harsher.

According to the bill posted on Parliaments website, employers are guaranteed an extra 250 hours of overtime per worker per year. For the rest, they would have to seek employees agreement.

Lajos Kosa, the Fidesz lawmaker who was the original author of the changes, told Parliament this week that the Hungarian workweek will continue to consist of five eight-hour days as a rule, stressing that employees will get paid for any overtime.

He added that the weekly ceiling including extra overtime will be 48 hours of work.

Proposed is that they're guaranteed 250 hours, and can ask for up to 400.

Meaning that 400 becomes the new standard for employment.

Also apparently they only have to pay them for the OT within 3 years.

First of all, it's a sign that management don't know what they're doing if workers constantly work over the 40 hr limit. Then there's the issue of them wanting to take the extra wages away with the help of their buddy the state.
Not really complicated to see why people don't like it these days.

I think he has no life outside of work, being a slave to your job means you have nothing at all besides the job which is fine if you enjoy being slave labor but most people only work so they can enjoy the money on days they dont work.

The proposed law is that they can require 250 hours, with the ability to "ask" for up to 400 (so an extra 150).

But as we've seen in other places *coughAmericacough*, 400 just becomes the standard.

The entire premise behind your original statement is absolute bullshit.

It has been proven over and over and over again that work-life balance is key, that working less hours is objectively better for you when it comes to both your physical and mental health. There's tons of evidence that working shorter days/weeks has no impact on or improves productivity as tons of hours are wasted anyways.

"Hard work never hurt anyone" yeah tell that to all these factory workers that can barely walk or stand or have trouble breathing because they beat the shit out of their bodies for 30-40 years.

Even people who love their job dont enjoy what is being described and even a cushy and fun job gets old which is why people dont work all the time.

Also people often have to climb over hurdles and obstacles before landing that dram career, very few people start in the job they love, they have to work their way to it.
