Like both were definitely less successful than the competition, but whatever impact they had seems only remembered by people with a specific interest in retro games. Its not like PS1 or Nintendo consoles, where people who never played it are still actively seeking out ways to play the games.

Dreamcast in particular is such an interesting console

the Saturn is just still expensive and a bitch to emulate so its hard for people to seek it out. I could see a Dreamcast Mini type of deal be a success but i don't think Sega would want to put the Money into that. Especially considering they don't even make the Genesis versions of the same thing.

dc iirc was the first console to attempt online play. at least designed with online play. my memory is failing me but I seem to recall the genesis having a way to go online. but as you can imagine it wasn't very good lol.

It sold less than the Wii U.

it stalled early. Sega just couldn't keep with with the other guys financially after all their previous blunders.

It was sales as well.

Moore stated that the Dreamcast would need to sell 5 million units in the U.S. by the end of 2000 in order to remain a viable platform, but Sega ultimately fell short of this goal with some 3 million units sold.[66][105] Moreover, Sega's attempts to spur increased Dreamcast sales through lower prices and cash rebates caused escalating financial losses. Instead of an expected profit, for the six months ending September 2000, Sega posted a 17.98 billion ($163.11 million) loss, with the company projecting a year-end loss of 23.6 billion. This estimate was more than doubled to 58.3 billion, and in March 2001, Sega posted a consolidated net loss of 51.7 billion ($417.5 million). While the PS2's October 26 U.S. launch was marred by shortageswith only 500,000 of a planned 1 million units shipped due to a manufacturing glitchthis did not benefit the Dreamcast as much as expected, as many disappointed consumers continued to wait for a PS2while the PSone, a remodeled version of the original PlayStation, was the best-selling console in the U.S. at the start of the 2000 holiday season.]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamcast#Launch

It had a decent enough launch (I think nearly every big brand console does) but the death signs began mere months after it launched.

xmen vs streetfighter is clearly the best Saturn fighter

guardian heroes is the only reason needed to own a Saturn though. that or Saturn bomberman. in college we would do 10 person Saturn bomberman multiplayer drinking games.

The Saturn is the saddest case here. Most of the top Dreamcast games have been ported to other systems but pretty much none of the Saturn games have. That combined with the difficulty of emulating it means those games are all but lost to modern gamers.

Sega trying to hop on 3D last minute really killed the longevity of some incredible games.

Not only is it difficult to emulate, but its relative obscurity means theres so few people actually working to overcome the complications :(

About half of my Saturn discs have the disc rot. It's sad. I can just burn some new copies but I don't know what to do with those discs since they can't really be sold either. They're doomed to just sit there untouched for probably the next few decades, slowly rotting away to nothing.

You can do it with a stock Saturn if you have an Action Replay cart. You just have to do the swap trick to load the thing onto the cart, then it auto boots. A small handful of games require patches and some that require the RAM cart may not work correctly since that's being used for the mod thing.

If you can find an actual mod chip it's a bit less of a hassle, but honestly not by much. I'd probably just go with the AR.
