I love Kingdom Hearts until all those stupid black cloak anime characters start showing up. The simple concept of hopping across Disney worlds, fighting the villains, and having characters from the movies join your party is fucking fantastic.

I still like the sequels gameplay-wise, but Kingdom Hearts 1 is still the best in terms of story. Could have easily been a stand-alone game.

If they were going to do sequels though, they should have put a little more thought into the writing. Or less thought, considering it seems they tried too hard with it in the first place.

The Disney world's in the middle of the game are a chore, everything else is cool

what, the Disney worlds are the entire game, then they throw in the anime stuff on top of that

To say you don't like the Disney stuff is to not like 90% of the game

I always thought KH1 was extremely weak in its story and gameplay compared to 2. It feels very childish, but not necessarily in a bad way.

I think that the "trilogy" of 1, CoM, and 2 tells an excellent story. I'm not wild about most of the other games (except DDD, which came closest to emulating the feel of 1 and 2 for me).

I'm watching Matt and Woolie play it after not having played it myself for over a decade and boyo, is this the truth.

The Little Mermaid level fucking sucks and so does the Tarzan level.

The Colosseum is the only part of KH I cared for.

All those Final Fantasy-esque dramatic story elements were just the thing for middle school me at the time. It just seemed so cooooooool. But yeah watching the game now is just a cringe fest.

Another SBFP fan! I'm enjoying the LP so far (think I'm an episode or two behind at the moment). I can't wait for them to get horribly lost in Monstro.

Like I said, I don't think "childishness" is inherently a bad thing. KH1 is a very whimsical and silly game, but that's what is great about it.

Tbf, KH1 was written with the mindset of being standalone. It wasn't until it sold well that they decided to add in sequel hooks with the Final Mix version.

Now they always write the games with the next two games in mind.

The thing is I feel that it stands in stark contrast to Organization XIII and the complicated nature of the overriding plot. Series can't quite agree on a tone.
