It feels like Tetris almost single handedly created the puzzle game genre, or at least popularized it. It created literally hundreds of clone type games, influenced similar styles of games (Puyo Puyo, Dr. Mario) and is definitely an inspiration for the match 3 type games that exist now too. Like, the mushroom pops out of the block and starts heading the opposite direction of the side of the block that you hit, which was a nice touch and something unseen before in 1985.
