Just downloaded it for my Switch, at least my initial impression is that this game is huge and detailed and the gameplay is incredibly deep.

Is it not as grand scale as it seems or is this the steal of the century?

Or is it only free to play because the desire to use microtransactions is almost a certainty?

it's free to play but i quit when i saw how they limit you. you can only have 2 or 3 warframes at a time, the weapon slots fill up fast too. i didn't want to just level up warframes and throw them away constantly

This.

Hop from planet to planet
Do excavation missions for relics
Go to fissure missions and use relics - On the reward screen you typically want the gold or silver item for higher value
Trade

Does the game require multiple warframes to progress or is it more just to have diversity in your gameplay?

Yeah, the Warframe slots are locked behind Platinum. But Platinum can be obtained in other ways than buying it. You can play and get items in game that you can sell to other players for platinum. So you can get the microtransaction currency in game without buying it. It's nice, and Warframe is fantastic.

Late game builds can be annoying to gather the items for, that can be said for many games but its mainly what you do here.

it's horizontal progression so yes you have to level multiple warframes which I don't like either. it's tied to a prestige rank or something that goes up every time you master a new warframe or weapon. so if you really like a certain weapon, too bad, you just hit max lvl with it and there's no point in using it again

False. You can get additional slots.

this just describes the main gameplay loop of the game
there's just 1 kind of mission that's good to do too, i assume you're just doing the infinite enemies types every time for the rest of the game

As someone who's played for years, you can get a lot of it without spending a dime. There's an in-game trading system with other players to make Platinum.

Of course there's a grind to get things worth trading, but it's a free game so that's to be expected, and the gameplay is so fun that for the most part it's not too bad.

Sure there is. If you like using a weapon...you keep using it. It takes 20 minutes to max rank a weapon on Hydron, even less if you do an ESO run..

EDIT:

Not if you want to get the drops from the other mission types/enemy types. It sounds like you played the game for 10 hours back in 2014 or so and are just doing your best to turn people off the game now.

yeah if you like a weapon keep using it and then never progress in the game anymore. i'm sure it's different when you've been playing for hundreds of hours and have all the content open to you. but when I'm just going through unlocking all the planets i have to play weapons and warframes I don't like or you can't progress

Honestly using different weapons and frames is the point of the game anyway so if you don't like that than yeah it's best to just quit the game.

Yeah it can be kind of a wall at the beginning but there's enough initial slots where you can still hold on to what you like while using other stuff for Mastery fodder. It's not like you just have a single slot for each type.

It's probably the only game I wouldn't mind spending real money on for microtransactions. The attention to detail and quality is impressive. You can tell the team cares about the game and the community and I don't mind supporting that with dollars.

You mean you actually have to put time and effort into a game to get good stuff? Especially a game that has constant free content and updates? Shocking.

If you need a good mainstay weapon that can be crafted relatively early and painlessly, the Hek and the Soma are solid opener performers.

Also, you aren't that far in the game, but there's another augment type that only works on rank 30 gear.

If you find weapon mods that are +elemental and +status chance, those will sell for a pretty penny. There's the lightning version of those for Rifle, Shotgun, and Secondary farmed on a Hive type mission on Eris, which are the hardest to get and will be the most valued.

Totally fair. The grind is all there is to Frame at the end of the day. You either take it or leave it. I put 1000+ hours into it myself.

I just farted in a relic's general direction, got an item that sold for 30 platinum, and now can buy more frame and weapon slots, not even an hour of playing.

Warframe is probably the most generous free to play game around that doesn't even feel like a F2P game and more of an actual AAA game

if you like it that's great but some people ITT were literally trying to tell me that's not how the game works. I think the best way to approach the game is to say "this is worth $15" or however much a starter pack cost (if you like playing many weps and frames)

a lot of the time in the beginning is figuring out how things worked. easily the first 50hours. once you actually know the flow you can get fun weapons and frames in not a large amount of time (if i had to redo it all again i could easily get the good stuff in a fraction of the time investment) especially when other players can run you through missions in 1minute and clear whole planets in 15-20minutes tops. once you know the good leveling spots, once you figure out how to trade, once you learn how the mod system functions ect. felt like the game didnt even really start for me till i was 100+ hours invested and once that clicked it hooked me for another 300hours.

I don't mind spending to get some platinum for cosmetic stuff. All my weapons and frames I farmed for in missions and whatnot though.

So all of my actual gameplay stuff I've gotten I've farmed up, but I have bought skins, helms, syndanas, armor kits, and a cosmetic ship and some stuff to decorate it.

Warframe is a hell of a game though I personally burned out at about 300 hours. Which is a fuckton of time for me. I don't spend that much time on many games. I didn't go F2P though. Spent a decent amount of money. Don't regret it either. It's a game that deserves support.
