you can absofreaking lutely get to conversationally solid level in that time, but you'll have to commit more than a few rounds of duolingo to it.

The faster you can get to reading and listening to stuff, the faster you'll get good. It should take only around 3 months of moderate study (committing to memory about 20 new words a day perhaps) and in that time you should have enough vocab and grammar under your belt to infer through context stuff you read. Doing the same with listening will take more practice but 10 months is plenty of time.

Once you make reading and listening to it a part of your daily life (forcing yourself to keep up with news exclusively through the language, playing games in it, reading most of your entertainment media in it) the rest comes down to time and exposure.

And yeah last time I was in Germany was only 4 months after starting to learn German and I was perfectly fine in like coffee shops/bars etc. I switched to English in restaurants because that was more complicated.

Listen to a lot of German music, play games in German (Bethesda games like Skyrim and Fallout are great, in no small part because of the inventory system wherein there's no L1-L2 translation, just an image and the L2 word).

Try playing Diablo, with it's antiquated/"High German" language, in German :p
