A reporter earned praise Monday after she called out President Donald Trump, over one of his more questionable claims, right to his face.

CBS Paula Reid challenged Trump over his discredited assertion that his administrations policy of separating migrant children from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border was the same as that conducted by former President Barack Obama.

Obama had a separation policy. We all had the same policy, Trump said. You did not have it, sir. No, you didnt, Reid fired back.

Trump said he tried to do it differently and claimed Obama had a separation policy but people dont like to talk about it. As Trump walked away, Reid said: Sir, it was different. You decided to prosecute everyone at the border.

While it's true that she was just doing her job, it's become the norm to let this administration slide, so I have to give her kudos for standing up to that bullshit.

Tf kind of s*** logic is this

what she did is the baseline required for good journalism

nearly all interviews of trump are bad journalism

when you ask him a question and he tells a blatant lie it is inappropriate to move on to the next question

responding with the correct information, as she did, is the appropriate action for a responsible journalist

ITP: People don't deserve to be praised when they do a good job at work. I'll let my boss know this immediately. I'll make sure not to praise firefighters for running into fires to save people because they are just doing their job.

I usually agree with you, but I find this an utterly baffling stance to take.

Yes, those not calling him out do deserve scorn, but she does deserve praise for actually being the one of very few to actual do it. Sure, I wish this was the standard response from them to him - simply the next journalist calling him out, or the one that questioned him doing it instead of just being resigned and letting him get away with it. But we should help and support the ones doing it to encourage more to find their integrity and do it as well.

I wouldn't necessarily call other reporters spineless. When actually doing your job gets you banned from the White House,
it requires some people to play along to continue exposing what's happening.

Tf kind of shit logic is this

The best logic. There's not a question to this administration that should not be capped off with "what is wrong with you?" The fact that the media lets a ton of shit slide for this admin is so damn telling.

[snips from some other people]

i dont consider what she did "a good job"

i consider it "the baseline requirement" to do the job at all

the fact that she's the only one doing it means she should be teaching journalism to her peers, not that she should be treated as having done something spectacular and unique

I agree. She should be paid a large sum to teach preparedness and advance fact checking to her peers.

Not because she deserves a bonus for her work, but because it's necessary and she's apparently the only one who knows how.

I agree it's very disappointing, but we have to start somewhere. Sadly it also seems she is unique, which is just frankly disappointing. But rather than scorning praise for her, I feel is better to point to those not doing it that she is the example they should hold themselves to. What they should be doing at a very base level. That she's who they follow after, not shitty people after soundbites are those too lazy/worn out to try and tell Trump he's wrong.

Trump literally has nothing in situations like this. He just babbles out tweet-level talking points whenever he's confronted with a hard question. For someone that made such a game of breaking down walls of civility and decorum in the election, he absolutely depends on it to have a press conference

IMO, Reid fully maintained civility and decorum while telling Trump he was lying to her face.

The point is, we must emphasize that the press's failure to do what she's doing is what is notable and extraordinary, and demand better of them, not merely view her as an outstanding member of the press who went above and beyond our expectations.

She met expectations. Today, that is outstanding, but it shouldn't be. We cannot alter our expectations, we must be clear that what she did is the only acceptable response when a politician objectively lies to the press.

I get that, which is why I feel you should be shaming the ones failing more than scorning praise for her. I don't see that working as well, and possibly only harming. Perhaps I am wrong, but I do feel holding her up as a good example can help, even if it is just as "this is what you should be doing, stop sucking". Direct the ire at them and not her so much.

I think we might be ultimately wanting the same thing and just framing it differently though.

Probably. I certainly agree the focus should be shaming those who are failing to do their job.

I simply feel that we cannot make a big deal of someone doing their job correctly, beyond empowering her to help others also do their job correctly. Otherwise we risk sending the message that what she did is 'beyond expectations' rather than 'meets expectations'.

This is what the American people want, 100% of the time, anytime any person is in front of Trump and broadcasting his words to the country. Full preparedness to refute lies on the spot, immediately.

I get that, and not sure I disagree. Under normal circumstances I'd agree completely. Heck, I think they should be doing it with Trump even more than they usually might.

But America, from my outside perspective, seems to have jumped ship entirely from journalists doing what they should long ago that holding that to normal standards is holding them to a standard they long since gave up on holding themselves to.

it is possible that the degree to which our right wing has moved has caused them to prioritize victory over truth. any victory, no matter how small, over any truth, no matter how serious.

i am hopeful that is not the case. my conservative friends are not like that, and we do talk politics.
