I used to always pick items that lost the longest. But if I know I'll use the item before it expires I will take ones closer to the date to contribute into lessening food waste.

There are a couple grocery stores in my area that leave products on the shelf long after they are expired, so I always check.

Sometimes, mostly on dairy products, milk and yogourt.
I also check when the meat and fish I eat was packaged.

i usually avoid those places too if i can help it... if not then i check every item that i buy since it's clear they're scummy enough to not waste items way past their sell by/best by date.
